SPRINGFIELD, Ill. —
The Johnstown Tomahawks had four different goal-scorers and goaltender Collin Brennan made 21 saves in a 4-2 victory over the Springfield Jr. Blues in front of 650 fans at the Nelson Center.
Jordan Watt had a goal and an assist, and captain Mitch Kontny, Cody Boyd and Ian Spencer also scored as the Tomahawks snapped a four-game winless streak (0-2-2).
Boyd’s goal 1:12 into the second period was the eventual game-winner.
Kontny scored on the power play 8:50 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Johnstown. The Tomahawks earned a power play opportunity when Jon Carkeek was put in the box for tripping. Watt picked up the assist.
Johnstown excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances.
The Tomahawks were below their usual level of shot production, taking 20 shots compared to the 29.5 Johnstown averages. The Tomahawks were often in penalty trouble, as it ended with eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time.
The Tomahawks had assists from Matt Williams, Mitch Hall, and Cody Gylling, who each chipped in one. Watt scored at 7:21 of the opening period to tie the game at 1-all. Springfield had a goal by Brett Skibba 1:16 into the contest.
Springfield was often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and two majors for 34 minutes in penalty time.
Springfield’s Ryan Atkinson scored 12:33 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Johnstown. Jack Sloan provided the assist.
The Tomahawks registered two goals on five power play opportunities. The Jr. Blues' Matt Leon stopped 16 shots out of the 20 that he faced.
The fourth-place Tomahawks improved to 23-18-12 with 58 points. Johnstown holds a six-point advantage over fifth-place Port Huron (52) and are 10 in front of sixth-place Springfield (48).
The Tomahawks and Jr. Blues meet again at 7 tonight in Springfield.
