Gannon defeats Lady Cats

Gannon took a five-set win over Pitt-Johnstown on Friday at the Sports Center in the first round of PSAC crossover play.

UPJ fell to 13-5 overall, 7-3 in the confrence. Gannon improved to 12-7, 7-3.

Kelsey Shanabrook had 14 kills and 16 digs and Marissa Erminio added 10 kills and 13 digs for the Lady Cats.

UPJ won the opening and third sets, 25-19 and 25-21, respectively. Gannon’s wins were 25-20, 25-19 and 15-12.

Beth Kendera had nine kills and two blocks, Katie Svetahor added 17 digs, Allison Mondorff finished with 34 assists and Brittany Saetre had 10 digs.

District 6 unveils brackets

Westmont Hilltop holds the top spot in the District 6 Class A soccer tournament and Somerset tops the area’s girls squads with a No. 1 seed in the girls’ AA bracket as announced by District on Friday.

In the 6-A boys bracket, the Hilltoppers take on Penns Valley at

6 p.m. on Thursday at Richland. Bishop McCort - the bracket’s third seed - takes on Belleville Mennonite on Wednesday at Hollidaysburg.

In 6-AA boys, Forest Hills enters as the tournament’s third seed while Bishop Carroll is planted in the fourth spot. The Rangers face Philipsburg-Osceola at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Richland while the Huskies tackle Juniata Wednesday at Altoona with a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.

Richland (third) and Bishop McCort (fifth) enter the 6-A fray with the Rams hosting Moshannon Valley at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Crimson Crushers face Penns Valley in Altoona on Tuesday.

Four area teams join the Golden Eagles in the 6-AA bracket with ninth-seeded Bishop Carroll battling Tyrone on Tuesday in Altoona for the right to face Somerset on Thursday. Second-seeded Westmont Hilltop takes on Bedford on Thursday at Richland (8 p.m.) while No. 5 seed Forest Hills draws Bellefonte at Hollidaysburg on Wednesday at 5:30.
