JOHNSTOWN — q q q

Green streak: District 6-A top-seed Portage knocked off unbeaten Heritage Conference champion Homer-Center last week to jump into the top spot and earn a home game against No. 8 Blairsville.

The Mustangs (8-1) whacked the Bobcats 38-6 on the road in Week 9.

Coach Gary Gouse’s traditional ground attack has been impressive once again. Junior Caleb Kephart has rushed for 1,214 yards and 15 touchdowns on 129 carries, and sophomore Luke Dividock has 757 yards and seven scores on 91 attempts.

Portage has 2,619 rushing yards as a team, an average of 8.6 per run and just shy of 300 a game (291). The Mustangs have 36 rushing touchdowns.

As if that isn’t enough for opponents to worry about, junior quarterback Michael Bryja has thrown for 848 yards, completing .542 percent of his passes, with 11 touchdowns and only one interception.

Eagles prepped: In Class AAA, Somerset will have an opportunity to rewrite the script from last season.

The third-seeded Golden Eagles (9-1) will once again travel to No. 2 University Prep (7-0), a District 8 team. Last season, University Prep won a high-scoring 47-38 game in Pittsburgh.

This time, Somerset will count on a solid defense and versatile offense.

Somerset has rushed for 2,104 yards, or 210.4 a game, with four different runners gaining 286 or more yards. Senior quarterback/back Tanner Stull has 706 yards and probably would be near or over 1,000 if not for a mid-season injury that kept him out.

The only positive from that situation is that sophomore Dylan Barnes developed into a multi-dimensional quarterback who has thrown for 732 yards and rushed for 557. Stull has 512 passing yards.

Geroy Simon never allowed obstacles or naysayers’ opinions to deter him throughout a career as the most prolific receiver in the history of the Canadian Football League.
So, when Geroy says the primary goal in his post-playing career is to become a general manager, it probably isn’t wise to bet against the Greater Johnstown High School graduate.

But the Berlin Brothersvalley sophomore back actually has been a much more patient runner this season, and that’s made a significant difference to the undefeated Mountaineers’ success.
