When he digs into the batter’s box, Mike Valcheff is hard to miss.
At 6-foot-4, 240 pounds, Valcheff looks and plays the part of a power hitter for the Berkley Hills Renegades in the Johnstown AAABA League.
But the Westmont Hilltop graduate isn’t one dimensional.
Renegades GM/manager Roland Black marvels at how Valcheff often resembles a player penciled into the top of the lineup rather than the cleanup spot.
“You would think for a big, power-type guy he would strike out a lot but he’s the whole package at the plate,” Black said. “He works the count like a contact hitter – like a 1 or 2 guy. He hits the breaking ball and the offspeed stuff to the opposite field. He knows how to hit those pitches.
“He’s not just the prototypical power hitter who waits on the fastball. He’s disciplined, and he’s tough to get out.”
Valcheff easily cleared the left-field fence at Roxbury Park on Wednesday night against league co-leader Martella’s Pharmacy. The two-run blast wasn’t enough to overcome Martella’s in a 7-6 game, but it put Valcheff into the league lead with three homers. Two of those were at Roxbury and one at Point Stadium.
