Sewickley Academy shuts out North Star in PIAA soccer
A run to the PIAA’s final four came to an end for North Star, which fell to Sewickley Academy 5-0 Tuesday night at Hempfield Area High School in a Class A boys soccer semifinal.
The Cougars end their season with a 20-3 mark and a second trip to the state semifinals in four seasons.
Three area teams remain in playoff hunt
Three area teams – the Bishop Carroll girls volleyball squad and the boys’ soccer teams from North Star and Bedford – continue their respective quests for PIAA gold tonight.
The Huskies will face Cochranton in a Class A state semifinal at 7 p.m. at DuBois High School. The Cougars will play Sewickley Academy at 6 p.m. at Hempfield High School while in the late game at the Greensburg school scheduled for 8 p.m., the Bisons will battle West Allegheny.

Shade’s hard-fought, dramatic victory over Northern Bedford in the District 5 Class A quarterfinal was a stunner, especially for the Black Panthers faithful, who were already planning for Saturday’s playoff game against Tussey Mountain.
Annual Santa Fund Soccer Classic will return
The third annual Santa Fund Soccer Classic, featuring all-star seniors from Cambria and Somerset Counties, will be held as a boys and girls doubleheader on Nov. 23 at Greater Johnstown’s Trojan Stadium.
Indians claim 5-AA golf title
Last year, Conemaugh Township won the District 5 Class AA golf title in dramatic fashion, surprising Bedford with a one-stroke victory.
The Indians took all of the guesswork away on Tuesday at Down River Golf Course in Everett finishing with a 318, 26 strokes ahead of the runner-up Bisons, to claim their second straight crown. Chestnut Ridge was third with 347.
Portage voted most likely to succeed in WestPAC
In the WestPAC this season there are two new coaches – at Rockwood and Ferndale – and two others returning to the top spot at Conemaugh Valley and Shade.
But it was the schools that have been the perennial powers in the league that received the most votes from fellow coaches as teams to watch during Monday’s WestPAC media day held at Portage Stadium.
Turning close matches into pins pays off with victory for Berlin
Berlin Brothersvalley turned close matches into falls, which made sure that the Mountaineers’ WestPAC victory over North Star was never in doubt.
Berlin (5-0) recorded seven falls – including four in what had been tight matches – in a 55-13 rout of North Star (4-2).

North Star shuts down Shade
In the first round of the PIAA District 5 Class A playoffs, the North Star Cougars hosted the Shade Panthers in a Week 6 rematch.
The game started off in North Star’s favor, and the Cougars won by the final score 21-0.
