Second place little consolation to contenders
Perspective can be a tricky thing in athletics.
Just ask Richland’s Nico Pecora and Bedford’s Jon Gabriel.
Day 1 gives ups and downs for region
There was plenty of talk about roller coasters on Thursday afternoon at the Giant Center, but it had nothing to do with the thrill rides across the parking lot at Hersheypark.
It was all about the ups and downs of the PIAA Class AA Wrestling Championships.
Danel helping Falcons to Division III tournament
When Chelsea Danel was a senior at North Star, the Cougars were able to win a District 5-AA basketball title.
Now Danel, a senior at Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, is a key contributor on a Falcons’ hoops squad which upset top-seeded Lebanon Valley 53-47 in the Commonwealth Conference championship on Saturday. It was the ninth title for the Falcons in 13 appearances.
Richland wrestler rebounds
Dried blood clung to Nick Naglic’s lip.
A cut to his right eyebrow had finally stopped bleeding but was in need of some stiches.
Central Cambria’s Murin earns championship at 106 pounds
Central Cambria freshman Max Murin was the only area wrestler to capture gold Saturday during the PIAA Class AA Southwest Regional tournament at Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
The 106-pounder edged out Penn Cambria’s Nolan Link 2-0 in the bracket’s championship bout.
Red Devils’ Murin remains unbeaten in AA Southwest tourney
While wrestling in the lowest possible varsity weight class, it appears that there isn’t a stage too big for Central Cambria freshman Max Murin.
At least that’s what he’s shown during the first day of the PIAA Class AA Southwest Regional tournament at Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
Tussey Mountain defeats North Star for 5-AA girls title
The Tussey Mountain Titans didn’t want to leave Pitt-Johnstown’s Sports Center without a District 5 Class AA title for a third straight year.
Two years in a row, Tussey Mountain had to watch another celebrate on the Richland Township court. Last year, that meant that the Titans were denied a spot in the state tournament.
Berlin, Ridge 1-2 in 5-AA tourney
The theme for Chestnut Ridge during the first day of the District 5 Class AA wrestling tournament: Throw it back.
The theme for Berlin Brothersvalley on Friday at Windber Area High School: Redemption.
Even if both squads didn’t have working narratives going, their performances were good enough to keep them 1-2 in the team standings after a day.
North Star earns shot at 5-AA girls title
Second-seeded North Star’s defense had a shutdown fourth quarter against No. 3 Everett in the District 5 Class AA girls semifinal on Thursday night.
The Cougars held a formidable Warriors squad without a fourth-quarter field goal until only 42.7 seconds remained in the game on North Star’s home court.
Chestnut Ridge, Berlin expected to dominate District 5-AA tourney
During the dual-meet season, the path to District 5 supremacy led through either Berlin Brothersvalley or Chestnut Ridge.
When the District 5 Class AA individual tournament opens today at Windber High School, most weight classes will have a distinct Chestnut Ridge or Berlin flavor in the top seeds.
