BEAVER FALLS — VANDRAK– Dr. Robert F., board certified pediatric orthodontic dentist, retired Army colonel, Fellow of the American Academy of General Dentistry and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, died Dec. 28 2013. Born June 1930 in Johnstown, son of Maria and Stephen Vandrak. Preceded in death by parents and four sisters, Mrs. Anna Mikulsky, Mrs. Margaret Torok, Mrs. Catherine Homola and Frances Vandrak. Survived by wife of 55 years, Nancy (Fisanick) Vandrak, Chippewa Township, Beaver Falls; and the following children: Dr. Robert S. Vandrak, married to Mrs. Heidi (Black) Vandrak; Mrs. Kathy (Vandrak) Kunkel, married to Dr. Thomas Kunkel; Mrs. Michelle (Vandrak) Vojtek, married to Edward Vojtek; Kenneth Vandrak, married to Mrs. Heather (Yalich) Vandrak. Also survived by the following grandchildren: Kristen Kunkel, Kevin Kunkel, Craig Kunkel, Julia Vandrak, Jane Vandrak, Robert P. Vandrak, Stephen Vandrak, Kylee Hansan, Jonathan Hansan, Ashley Vojtek, Gregory Vojtek, Stephanie Vojtek, Chloe Vandrak, Carter Vandrak and Corynn Vandrak. He graduated from Holy Ghost High School in Philadelphia in 1948 and received a BA degree from St. Mary’s College in Connecticut and a BS degree and DMD degree from the University of Pittsburgh. In 1969, he completed a two-year general dentistry residency at Walson Army Hospital, Fort Dix, N.J. In 1974, he completed another two-year pediatric/orthodontic residency at Children Mercy Hospital in association with the University of Missouri School of Medicine. He obtained his board certification and diplomat status in 1979. His professional services to his country spanned 21 years as a general dentist at a Cleveland Niki Site, Korea, Washington, D.C. area and Fort Dix and as a pediatric/orthodontic dentist in Kansas City, Mo.; Kaiserlautern, Germany; Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; and East Liverpool, Ohio. He also held the following professional positions: Director and chief of the dental clinic at Fort Holabird, Md., for which he received a Meritorious Service Medal; director and chief of the cleft palate clinic at Landstuhl Military Hospital in Germany and chief of the pediatric clinic in Kaiserlautern, Germany, for which he received another Meritorious Service Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster); and director of the pediatric clinic and officer in charge of a large dental clinic at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. The Legion of Merit was presented to him for his exceptional meritorious service. Upon retiring from the Army, he associated with Dr. Larry Dietz and practiced in Calcutta, Ohio, where he was on the staff at East Liverpool Hospital. He contributed articles to dental magazines and participated as a speaker in Berlin, Germany; Pennsylvania; Kansas; and Missouri. He was a member of Christ Divine Teacher Catholic Church since 1981. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Lutton Chippewa Funeral Home, 117 Blackhawk Road, Beaver Falls, Pa. 15010, where funeral prayers will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Monica Catholic Church, Chippewa, formerly Christ the Divine Teacher, Father John Naugle, celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chippewa Township, where Veterans Honor Guard will conduct full military honors at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday. (www.luttonfuneralhome.com)
