GORHAM, MAINE — KALP – Carol Ann (Thomas), Gorham, Maine, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at Gorham House, Maine, after a long battle with cancer. Carol, daughter of H. Fred and Alverta Thomas of Johnstown, grew up in Ferndale. She graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and completed postgraduate studies in Maine and New Jersey. Her career in elementary education spanned 27 years, 20 of them in Randolph Township, N.J. Carol also taught in Chatham, N.J., and Bangor, Maine. A popular and gifted educator, she was honored with the state of New Jersey’s first “Teacher of the Year” award presented by New Jersey Gov. Thomas Keane in 1987. She also participated in a symposium for outstanding teachers in l986. With a close teacher friend, she developed a popular preschool summer program in New Jersey called “Duck School,” which ran for 14 summers. Carol enjoyed pinochle, arts and crafts, games with her grandchildren, music, gardening and outdoor sports. She volunteered as a flower arranger at the Flower Box at Maine Medical Center, where she also served as secretary on the visiting board of Children’s Hospital. Member of Cosmopolitan Club in Gorham, and served as the club’s president in 2010-2011. Carol was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend. Survived by her husband of 55 years, Larry; daughter, Karen K. Berrell (Robert), Orono, Minn.; son, Robert A. Kalp, (Laurie), Brick, N.J.; five grandchildren, Kathrine and Andrew Berrell and Sean, Sarah and Brendan Kalp; brother, H. Fred Thomas, Elkton, Md.; and nephew, Trey Thomas, Austin, Texas. Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at First Parish Congregational Church, UCC of Gorham, One Church St., Gorham.
