Vinton Joseph Griffith

SOMERSET — GRIFFITH – Vinton “Bun” Joseph, 97, Somerset, died June 30, 2013, at Siemon’s Lakeview Manor Estate. Born Jan. 20, 1916, in Heilwood, Pa., son of John Christ and Sarah Jane (Dunmire) Griffith. Preceded in death by parents; wife, the former Doloris K. Flynn, who died in 1972; son, John C. Griffith; and sisters and brothers, Susie Milligan, Bessie Marks, Mabel Winters, Anna  Lohr, Marie Yoder, Lola Griffith, Mary Griffith, Johnny, Heil, Howard and Orie Griffith. Survived by grandchildren, Sean and Heather Griffith, and a number of nieces and nephews. Also survived by loving companion, Lerene Dietle Murray, and her family, Judy (Clarence) Greig and Kay (Donald) Albright, all of Somerset; grandchildren, Jill (Bruce) Cage, Cumberland, Md.; Candace (Todd) Browell, Bedford; and Valerie (Brad) Kleinert, Rockwood; and great-grandchildren, Jared and Chad Browell and Luke Kleinert. Vinton was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Somerset. Former member of JBJ school board. Former owner of the Quemahoning Hotel, Jenners. Life member and 32nd degree of Lodge 358 F&AM, Jaffa Temple, Altoona. Also a life member of Eagles Aerie 1801, and past president, Somerset Jenner Rod & Gun Club. Honorary member of Somerset Volunteer Fire Department and member of Travelers Association (TPA). He was a RSVP at Somerset Courthouse and Somerset Office Building; was a night foreman at Simpson Mine; a toll collector on the Pennsylvania Turnpike; and retired a foreman of Somerset Borough Maintenance in 1981. One of his most memorable times in his life as a young man in 1937, was when he went to church in Hyde Park, N.Y., and was seated across the aisle from then President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and his wife, Eleanor. He had many friends along life’s journey. He will be missed by his family and friends. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home, Somerset, where service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, the Rev. Edward Hammett, officiating. Interment, Forest Lawn Memorial Park. A masonic service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
