John F. Sabo

UPPER YODER TOWNSHIP — SABO – John F. “Jack,” 68, Upper Yoder, went to be with his beloved wife, Susan (Toth), in heaven, June 6, 2014. Born Dec. 21, 1945, in Johnstown, son of Robert J. and Bertha (Wilson) Sabo.  Preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Roy and Hazel Wilson; paternal grandparents, Albert and Rose Sabo; father, Robert J. Sabo; brother, Robert C.; and mother-in-law, Bertha Toth.  Survived by mother, Bertha (Wilson) Sabo; daughters, Tracy, married to Sean Zinn, Murrysville, and Deborah Sabo, Altoona; son, Robert Sabo, Johnstown; grandson, Aydan Yoder, Altoona; and close family friend, Joel Meadows.  Brother of Thomas Sabo, Johnstown; Richard “Dick,” and wife, Cathy, Windber; Patricia, and husband, John “Jack” Rovan, Johnstown; and sister-in-law, Sylvia (Gramling) Sabo, Johnstown.  Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and loving friends and family who expressed much care and support.  John was a graduate of Greater Johnstown High School, Class of 1963. A two-year active service with the U.S. Navy led him to serve his country for 26 years as a Navy reservist.  He retired from the Freight Car Division, Bethlehem Steel Corp. and Freight Car America, and was honored as employee with most service in the car shop. He worked in the paint shop and served as shop steward, casual staff member and chief grievance man. He was mentioned in the book “Crisis in Bethlehem” for his role in the union as he helped negotiate many contracts and solve worker grievances.  Recently he was treasurer of the USW Health and Welfare Committee and financial secretary for both workers comp and legislative committees.  John served as vice president of the Johnstown Central Labor Council and was active in the United Way's food drives.  He loved participating in and receiving Reiki and enjoyed  gardening and time with his family. An avid baseball, softball and volleyball player for several teams and tournaments and enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.  He bowled for Rudberg Law league team at the Richland Lanes and participated in various tournaments.  Member of St. Clement Catholic Church, where funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, the Rev. William Rosenbaum. Committal, Grandview Cemetery.  Friends received from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home Inc., Broad Street.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John F. Sabo’s memory to the Alternative Community Resource Program, Autism Summer Camp Program, 310 7th Ave., Altoona, Pa. 16602, as your donation will help many children, including John’s grandson, Aydan.
