JOHNSTOWN — SIMMS – Rev. Thomas Edward, 88, Johnstown, passed away June 9, 2014. Born March 6, 1926, in Franklin Borough, son of Thomas and Mabel (Lane) Simms. Preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Teiko (Suzuki); and brothers, Charles, David, Paul and Nathaniel Simms; also sisters, Ruth Carter, Naomi Moore, Clarissa Greenwood and Violet Clayton. Survived by his children, Suzi Knight, Johnstown; Thomas Jr., Washington, D.C.; Charles, and wife, Claudia; Betty Simms; Anthony, and wife, Rachel; and John, and wife, Vangie, all of California; Linda, and husband, Don Smith, Johnstown; Monica Simms, Pittsburgh; 32 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; seven great-great- grandchildren; sister, Rachel Simms, Johnstown; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Thomas was a 1943 graduate of Dale High School. As a young man, he had about a dozen and a half bouts as an amateur boxer before entering the military. He was a veteran of the Korean War, where he served as an MP and also an interpreter. While in the Army, stationed in Japan, he met and married his wife, Teiko. Over the years, he was employed at Penn Traffic Co., Johnstown Traction Co. and Conemaugh & Blacklick Railroad. Thomas was an associate minister for many years at Jefferson Memorial First Born Church in Prospect. He established his National Prayer Ministry and National Bible Fellowship Ministry. He was active for many years with the Foster Grandparent Program through the Johnstown School District. He was honored by the Johnstown branch of the NAACP for African American Heritage Leaders. Family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Moskal-Reid Funeral Home, West End. A private family committal service will be held at a later date at Richland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to American Cancer Society, 350 Budfield St., Johnstown, Pa. 15904.
