NORTHERN CAMBRIA — SHAWARBY – Dr. Amr Omar, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at Miner’s Medical Center, Hastings. Born Feb. 17, 1959, in Cairo, Egypt, to the late Omar Khatab Shawarby and Safia Rezik. Survived by his loving wife and life partner of 13 years, the former Lisa Jean Nelson. Also survived by stepchildren, Ryan and Matthew Shell; son, Youseff Shawarby; and daughter Farrah Shawarby, whom he loved very much; brother, Khatab Shawarby, Cairo, Egypt; cousins, whom he loved as sisters, Mona Hashim and Amira Rezik, both of Cairo, Egypt; and Moushira Khatib, New Jersey; in-laws, Barry and Patricia Nelson, Northern Cambria; brothers-in-law, Michael (Raeann) Nelson, Westmont; Stephen Nelson, Northern Cambria; and Kevin (Sara) Nelson, Philadelphia; sister-in-law, Carrie (Jason) Lute, Elmora; and niece and nephews, Abigail, Kayden and Walter. A 1983 graduate of AZHAR University Cairo, Egypt, where he completed his residency in 1989, after which he took a position as a lecturer in cardio-thoracic surgery at AZHAR University Hospital and National Heart and Lung Institute. In 1989, he traveled to the United States and loved it so much he decided to stay. He completed a second residency in 1998 at Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital in association with Temple University. After living in this area, he decided he wanted it to be his home and opened a practice in the Northern Cambria area in April 1999. He was an asset to the community offering cardiac, thoracic and general surgery services. He became certified by the American Board of Surgery in 2000 and was inducted into the American College of Surgeons in 2003, which is one of the highest honors a surgeon can receive. He also had practices over the years in Phillipsburg, Tyrone, Altoona and Johnstown. He loved being a surgeon and all who knew him knew that surgery was his passion and always came first in his life. He spent his days working alongside the love of his life, Lisa. He was truly a blessing to the community and to all who knew him. He enjoyed spending most days with his Lisa. He also valued the friendships he made over the years with Jeff and Joyce; Rosario and Lia; Robin, Charlie and Kaitlyn; and Bill, Dino and Ahmad. He loved nature and traveling. He especially enjoyed his trips with Lisa to Cape Cod, Mass., and his visits back to Cairo, Egypt, to see his family and close friends. We especially thank our dear friend, Dr. Matthew Dvorchak, for his friendship over the years and the excellent care he provided during these difficult few months. We also want to thank Dr. Sbeitan and his staff, and special love and thanks goes out to our Miner’s Medical Center family who have worked with us over the years and have provided the most exceptional care and expressions of love and prayers for my husband and myself over that past several months. I also would like to thank the community for all the cards, prayers and well wishes. Friends received from 2 p.m. until time of service at 5 p.m. Friday at Moriconi Funeral Home Inc., Northern Cambria.
