Robert S. Baum

SOUTHMONT — BAUM – Robert S., 98, Southmont, died July 14, 2014, at his residence. Born Dec. 14, 1915, in Freeland, son of the late Fred and Anna Baum. Preceded in death by loving wife of 68 years, Lois C., on Oct. 14, 2013; and sister Mary. Survived by daughters, Kathy Ann, married to Douglas B. Stevens, Dallas, Pa.; and Georgia M., married to Thomas Cherry, Johnstown; grandchildren, Julie Davis, and fiance, Corey Gregory; and Elizabeth Stevens, and fiance, Ryan Staab; and Robert and Maria Stevens; and great-grandchildren, Brittany Davis and Lucas Stevens. Also survived by brother, David, and wife, Mildred, Tucson, Ariz.; and nephew, Jeffry Cramer, married to Patty, and children, Cayla, Travis and Jonah. Bob was a graduate of the Mining and Mechanical Institute, Freeland; Lafayette College, Easton; and the Loop Course at Bethlehem Steel Corp.; and completed studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Bob also was a professional engineer, having retired from the electrical department at Penelec and also was an engineering instructor at the “Asphalt Campus” at Pitt-Johnstown. Bob had been an Eagle Scout and an amateur radio operator. He was a World War II veteran, having served at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.; the Office of the Chief of Ordinance, Washington, D.C.; and in the 6th Air Force, having served in Panama; Salinas Air Force Base, Ecuador; and Randolph Field, Texas. Member of American Legion, Post 6, Clearfield. Life member of VFW Post 155 and a past member of their Ritual Team. Also a life member of Conemaugh Valley Chapter 14, Reserve Officers Association; Military Officers Association of America and the Military Order of World Wars. Member of Masonic Lodge 611, Freeland; Allegheny Mountain Forest 127, Cambria Council 32, Portage Royal Arch 195, Oriental Commandery 61, Knights Templar, Laurel Ridge Council 67, Conemaugh Gap York Rite College 34, Constans Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine, National Sojourners 76, Charles E. Lukins Chapter Heroes of “76” Jaffa Shrine and Jaffa Legion of Honor. Friends will be received from 6 p.m. until time of service at 7 p.m. Friday at Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary Inc., 921 Menoher Blvd., the Rev. Alice Tondora, officiating. Masonic service will be held prior to the funeral service, and military rites will follow the service, courtesy of Charles T. Menoher VFW Post 155. The family would like to thank Grane Hospice and Home Instead Senior Care for their dedicated care shown to Bob during his last days.
