MECHANICSBURG — CAVANAUGH – Pearl, passed on peacefully during the dawn of July 10, 2013, at her son’s home in Mechanicsburg, Pa., where she lived out her last three-plus years. Pearl, born Nov. 4, 1919, was the third child of Lee and Dorris Gross. She grew up in a loving home in the Hornerstown section of Johnstown, just blocks away from Robert Cavanaugh Sr., whom she had known all of her life. They were married just two weeks after Pearl Harbor on Dec. 21, 1941. Pearl and Robert share an extremely strong faith in God that brought them through one of the worst tragedies anyone can face. On June 4, 1962, Pearl found her four-year-old son, Robert Jr. drowned in Lake Stonycreek, where her father, an exceptional mason, had lovingly built his family a vacation home which is still used by them today. Robert Sr. joined his son on June 29, 1989, and now Pearl has joined them. They were lifelong members of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hornerstown. Memorial contributions may be sent there, 600 Ash St., Johnstown, Pa. 15902. This wonderfully loving daughter, mother, wife, aunt and friend moved on after sharing her love and faith with four children, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, so far, and another is on the way. She will be missed greatly and remembered lovingly. The grave stone at Grandview Cemetery, which marks the graves of Pearl, Robert Sr., Robert Jr. and Robert Sr.’s loving parents, is engraved with this highly appropriate verse “He gave, He took, He will restore.” There will be three memorial services, one at Trinity Lutheran Church in Johnstown, one at Lake Stonycreek and one in Mechanicsburg. These are not yet scheduled. You may contact the family for the dates if you wish to attend.
