James William McCann

JOHNSTOWN — McCANN – James William “Bill,” 82, Johnstown, died Feb. 11, 2014, at Windber Hospice. Born March 15, 1931, in Patton, son of the late Fred S. and Martha H. (McCoy) McCann. Survived by wife, Susan Elizabeth (Miller) McCann; children, Michael G. McCann, married to Jennifer Matas, State College; Molly E., married to Malcolm Freeman, Denver; and James W. McCann Jr., and partner, Lauren Petrillo, Lewistown; and grandchildren, Lily, James and Jackson Freeman; and Libby, Katie and Jimmy McCann. Also survived by sister, Gretchen Mulvehill, Ebensburg. Bill was a 1949 graduate of Patton High School. He attended St. Francis College from 1949 to 1951 before transferring to Pennsylvania State University in University Park in 1951. He graduated from Penn State with a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering in 1954. His college experience in Happy Valley began a lifelong love of all things Penn State. Following graduation, Bill started in the Looper Program at Bethlehem Steel in Johnstown. During 1957, he served in the U.S. Army at Fort Monmouth, N.J. After his U.S. Army service, he returned to Bethlehem Steel, where he was senior engineer and melter foreman before becoming assistant to the superintendent of steel in 1964 and then assistant superintendent of steelmaking in 1968. In 1981, he participated in the design, installation and operation of the new Electric Furnace Melt Shop in Johnstown. After 30 years with the company, he retired from Bethlehem in 1985. He was an electric furnace consultant for Dravo Corp. for several years before becoming a financial advisor for Legg Mason Wood Walker, a position he would hold for nearly two decades. He retired from Legg Mason Smith Barney in 2006. Over the years, Bill also was active in the community; at various times serving on the board of directors of both the Catholic Social Services of Cambria and Blair Counties and the Pittsburgh Section of American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). At the time of his death, he was an active member of both the Conemaugh Township Recreation Commission and Stonycreek Quemahoning Initiative (SQI). A longtime member of Sunnehanna Country Club, as well as treasurer of the board of directors for a decade, Bill was an avid golfer who also enjoyed skiing and jogging. He was a diehard Penn State fan who diligently followed all of the school’s sports, but was first and foremost a Penn State football fan holding football season tickets for 46 years. Bill was a quick wit who loved the classic comedies of Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello and Mel Brooks. This was evidenced by the names of his beloved golden retrievers, Stan, Ollie and Brooks. Bill also was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, where family and friends are invited to meet for a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday, celebrated by the Rev. Angelo Patti. Friends received from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary Inc., 921 Menoher Blvd. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Windber Hospice or SQI, c/o The Community Foundation.
