KUTZTOWN — QUIRK – Thomas Charles Jr., 91, a painter, sculptor, athlete and professor at Kutztown University, died Wednesday, July 9, 2014. Born Sunday, Dec. 31, 1922, in Pittsburgh. He attended school in Johnstown and graduated from Johnstown Catholic High School in 1941, where he played varsity football and baseball. Tom served in the U.S. Navy from July 1943 to January 1946. He graduated from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 1948 with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and education and from the University of Pittsburgh in 1964 with a master’s degree in education. Tom married Elizabeth Jane Reiber on Jan. 8, 1945, at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, Johnstown. He taught art in the Canon-McMillan School District in Canonsburg from 1954 to 1966, and was professor of Art at Kutztown University from 1966 to 1989, where he taught painting and drawing. Tom is listed in “Who’s Who in American Art” and has exhibited his work in numerous one-man and group shows throughout the United States since the 1960s. His most recent sculpture, “Assumption of the Blessed Mother,” is exhibited at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Kutztown. He also provided illustrations for a number of publications by Athenium Press, Dover Publications and Rodale Press. Preceded in death by his wife, Jane Reiber Quirk; parents, Dr. Thomas Charles Quirk and Ruth Pyle Quirk; and brother, James S. Quirk. Survived by his children, Ellen Fraumann, Madison, N.J.; Ruth (Gil) Tily, Phoenix, Ariz.; Elizabeth (Frank) Woods, Loudonville, N.Y.; Thomas III (Mary Connolley), Highland Park, Ill.; Patrick (Mary Brandon), Pittsburgh; and Brian (Victoria Hobbs), Naples, Italy; 19 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; also brothers, Richard F. Quirk and George P. Quirk. Tom will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Friends may call and visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 13, and from 9 a.m. until the time of memorial Mass at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Church, Kutztown, Pa. 19530.
