Richard C. Rodkey

McKINNEY, TEXAS — RODKEY – Richard C.  “Dick,”  85, formerly of Moline, Ill., and Rock Island, Ill., died in McKinney, Texas, May 29, 2014. Dick was born Aug. 21, 1928, in Uniontown, the son of Clarence and Clara Rodkey. He attended public schools in Pittsburgh and graduated from Duquesne University, where he met and married his wife, Margaret. They had been married 60 years and have six children, Susan Conklin, Long Grove, Iowa; Christopher Rodkey, Washington, La.; Eric Rodkey, Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; Mary Rodkey, Rock Island, Ill.; Peter Rodkey, Los Angeles, Calif.; and Rebecca Bennett, McKinney, Texas. He also is survived by 12 grandchildren.  Dick began his flying career as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force in 1952. He later became a corporate pilot and flew for companies in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Moline, Ill., where he retired as the manager of aviation with Deere & Co. in 1993. During his aviation career, he never lost the idea of the “romance of flying.” He was a member and officer of the National Business Aviation Association. He owned and flew a bi-wing airplane. He earned his basic and instrumental instructor’s licenses at age 60 in order to teach two of his children to fly. His other love was tennis. He obtained his tennis instructor’s certification at age 70. He played tennis on his 85th birthday this past August. We are a tennis family – Dad taught all of us. Dick enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, the outdoors and telling stories and making up silly songs and sayings to the embarrassment of his grandchildren. He loved watching the Marx Brothers and W.C. Fields, and we laughed at him laughing. He was the quintessential family man and an honorable man who was highly respected by all who knew him. We will miss him.  A private service was held May 31, 2014, in McKinney, at St. Michael the Archangel Parish, where Dick was a member. His body was donated to the medical school at the University of Texas in Dallas. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. June 7 at Sacred Heart Parish, Moline. Donations may be made to the local Alzheimer’s Association.
