Rev. Benjamin Dykas

JOHNSTOWN — DYKAS – Rev. Benjamin “Albert R.,” 85, former pastor of St. Columba Church, Johnstown, died Jan. 13, 2014. Born Feb. 28, 1928, in Boston, Mass., son of George and Sophie (Ignatowicz) Dykas. Preceded in death by parents; brother, Joseph; and aunt and uncle, Frank and Aniela Borowski. Survived by nephew, Richard Dykas, and family, Dedham, Mass.; and cousins, James Condon, and family, Las Vegas, Nev.; Michelle Pedzewick, and family, Walpole, Mass.; and Lillian Rock, and family, Bogart, Ga. A graduate of Medford High, Medford, Mass. Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He studied philosophy at Assumption Seminary, Chaska, Minn.; and theology at St. Anthony-on-Hudson, N.Y. Father Dykas was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop William Scully at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Albany, N.Y., on May 27, 1961, and served as a priest for 52 years. He celebrated his first Mass the following day at his home parish, St. John Chrysostom, West Roxbury, Mass. He was then assigned to St. Bonaventure, Don Mills, Ontario; then, St. Francis of Assisi, Montreal; Immaculate Conception, Trenton, N.J.; Catholic Information Center, Binghamton, N.Y.; St. Joseph’s, Endicott, N.Y.; and Holy Name, Ebensburg; St. John the Evangelist, Bellefonte; and St. John Gualbert Co-Cathedral. Father Dykas served four years as pastor at St. John the Baptist, Portage; 10 years at St. John the Baptist, Acosta; 10 months at St. Catherine of Siena, Duncansville, Pa.; four years at St. Boniface, St. Boniface; and then retired after serving seven years at St. Columba, Johnstown. Member of Polish American Priests Association and Polish Museum of America. Friends will be received from 1 p.m. until the time of transfer prayers at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, at Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home, 710 Broad St. Visitation will continue from 3 to 8 p.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church, 536 Decker Ave., where vigil service will be celebrated at 3 p.m. and where funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, Bishop Mark L.
