Eugene D. Certo

NORTHERN CAMBRIA — CERTO – Eugene D. “Gig,” 67, Northern Cambria, passed away Jan. 21, 2014, at home. Born Jan. 7, 1947, in Spangler, son of Domenick and Rose (Falls) Certo. Preceded in death by parents and infant son, David. Survived by wife, Elizabeth (Noren) Certo; daughters, Tresa (Michael) Risbon and Lori (Mike) Janosko, both of Northern Cambria; son, Matthew (Amber) Certo, Nicktown; grandchildren, Zachary, Jacob and Lucas Seymore; Megan Risbon; Brad, Brooke, Ben, Belle and Bristie Janosko; and Hannah, Carly and Domenick Certo; stepchildren, Shawn (Lynora) Kent, Fort Campbell, Ky.; David (Jennifer) Kent, Hastings; and Marc (Margaret) Kent, Northern Cambria; stepgrandchildren, Maura Risbon; Melody Ault; Melissa, Steve, Joshua and Brandon Ward; and Caleb, Mackenzie, Zachary, Emma, Ethan, Jonas and Simon Kent; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Lily and Sophia Ault. Also survived by brother, Francis (Catherine) Certo, Falls Church, Va.; Richard Certo, Arlington, Va.; twin sister, Christine Ganley, Patton; and Rose (Joe) Orr, Euclid, Ohio; aunt, Agnes (Tinik) Falls, Pittsburgh; and cousins, Donna, Bonnie and Cindy. Gig worked as a coal miner with Barnes & Tucker and Beth Energy Mines until he retired June 10, 1990, following a mining accident at Mine 33. Well-known in the local area for his community involvement, Gig was the president of Northern Cambria Borough Council. Life member of Spangler Fire Company, where he served as fire chief for many years. Member of Cambria County, Western Pennsylvania, Central District and Pennsylvania State Firemen’s associations. Member of Patton Moose Lodge 488, International Legion of Moose Penn Progress 84 and past president (May 1, 1996 to April 30, 1998) and treasurer for 11 years of Pennsylvania Moose Association District 16. Social member of Spangler American Legion, Ebensburg VFW, Ebensburg American Legion and Spangler VFW, where he was captain of the dart team. Friends received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Moriconi Funeral Home Inc., Northern Cambria. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Prince of Peace Church, Father Larry Lacovic, officiating.  Committal, Holy Cross Cemetery.
