JACKSON TOWNSHIP — DEMCHAK – John, 88, Jackson Township, passed away peacefully Feb. 1, 2014, at home. Born Aug. 4, 1925, in St. Michael, son of the late John Demchak and Anastasia (Krul) Demchak- Skeskow. He is preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Jacob Skeskow; sister, Ann Nedrich and Mary Byndas; and brother, Michael Demchak. He is survived by his wife, Mary (Hancharick) Demchak, whom he was married to for 64 years; these children: Paula (William) Shoemaker; John (Rita) Demchak; Robert Demchak; Thomas Demchak; MaryAnn Demchak; James (Janice) Demchak; and Janice (Jack) Bernat; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Helen Branick; and numerous nieces and nephews. John was a member of St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church, Mundys Corner, and the Knights of Columbus. He retired as a foreman for Bethlehem Mines 33, where he suffered severe injuries in a mining accident, which he overcame to enjoy a very long full retirement. John was a former member of UMWA. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946 and achieved the rank of corporal. He served in the Island Command 3rd Amphibious Division in the Asiatic Pacific area and saw action in Tinian, Marianas Island. He enjoyed membership in the Marine Corps League and Devil Dogs. A lifetime member and treasurer for 40 years for the Jackson Township Community Rod & Gun Club. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and woodworking, especially Adirondack chairs, and spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Askew-Houser Funeral Homes Inc., Nanty Glo, where a vigil prayer service will be held. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Vianney Church, the Very Rev. Andrew Stanko, VF, celebrant. Committal, St. Mary’s Cemetery. Graveside military rites by Conemaugh Valley Detachment, 287 Marine Corps League Ritual Team. In lieu of flowers, contributions in John’s memory may be made to the Jackson Township Ambulance Association or Conemaugh Regional Hospice.
