Charles Joseph Mayer

SHARPSBURG, GA. — MAYER – Charles Joseph, 44, formerly of Windber, passed away Feb. 1, 2014, at his home in Sharpsburg, Ga., surrounded by family after a year-long battle of aggressive brain tumors. Born Feb. 12, 1969, in Windber, to parents, Carl and Carol Mayer. Charlie was an incredible husband to his wife, Karrie, for the past 12 1/2 years and a very loving and active father to his children, Jakson (9) and Mackenzie (8). He was truly the most amazing husband, father, son, brother and friend! His sense of humor brought many smiles and laughter to all who knew him. Charlie was an Air Tran Airways Boeing 717 captain based in Atlanta for the past 11 years, following aviation careers with Chautauqua Airlines and U.S. Airways. He was a 1987 graduate of Windber Area High School and a 1992 graduate of Kent State University (Phi Delta Theta), where he made many lifelong friends. Charlie always lived his life to the fullest and lived true to his favorite saying “Life is Good.” He had a love for traveling, the Caribbean Islands, scuba diving, sailing, snow skiing, hiking, camping, mountain and road biking, woodworking, kayaking, water skiing and boating on Lake Wedowee in Alabama with his family, where he and his dad built a lake house. Charlie took pride in his vegetable garden, blueberry patch and fruit trees. A few weeks prior to his diagnosis, he and his wife went to the British Virgin Islands to fulfill their dream of obtaining their sailing certificates. Months before, he accomplished goals of riding in a 100-mile bike ride and completing his first sprint triathlon. One thing for sure, he could never say, “I wish I would have” because he always did! Charlie was preceded in death by his brother, Curtis Mayer; paternal grandfather, Charles L. Mayer; maternal grandparents, Mary (Cotz) Yonish, Joseph Cotz and Nicholas Yonish; and cousin, Justin Mayer. Survived by his wife, Karrie Mayer; son, Jakson; and daughter, Mackenzie, all of Sharpsburg, Ga.; parents, Carl and Carol Mayer; and grandmother, Nova Mayer, all of Windber; in-laws, Gary and Cindy Hale; brothers-in-law, Casey Hale (Liz) and Cole Hale (Trisha); and sister-in-law, Keely Lowe, all of Fort Wayne, Ind. A celebration of life memorial was held at McKoon Funeral Home, Newnan, Ga. Condolences may be expressed online at Donations can be made to Newnan YMCA in memory of Charlie. The Summit YMCA has shown extraordinary support to the family through scholarships and support this past year. Participate in helping the next family by visiting and put “In memory of Charles Mayer” in the Campaigner Name Box.
