MECHANICSBURG — MADIGAN – Joseph Paul, 91, Mechanicsburg, Pa., formerly of South Fork, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 27, 2013, at his home. Born in Portage, son of the late Joseph D. and Hilda (Karlheim) Madigan. Joseph graduated from St. Francis University with a bachelor’s degree in teaching and earned his master of education and principal certification from the University of Pittsburgh. He was a teacher, a football and track coach and a principal during his years at South Fork Croyle, Triangle Area and Forest Hills School Districts. He was a proud World War II Navy veteran who served as a pharmacist mate, 2nd Class in the Pacific Theater. Joseph was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mechanicsburg. He was a devout Catholic who daily sought strength and guidance through prayer; with special devotions offered to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Joe was an avid Steelers fan, a passionate golfer and a ruthless poker player. His family and friends will hold dear memories of a loving, kind and generous man who was full of life, laughter and a bit of blarney. Joseph is survived by his wife of 66 years, Violet (Hoover); daughters, Barbara Madigan Preston, Patricia Madigan, Karen Tomayko (Robert) and Betsy Piccolo (Michael); son, Joseph (Maureen); six grandchildren; one great-grandson; two stepgrandsons; one stepgranddaughter; nieces, nephews, cousins; and a multitude of friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 400 E. Simpson St., Mechanicsburg. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. Monday until the time of Mass at the church. Inurnment, Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Pa., with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church at the address above. Richardson Funeral Home, Enola, Pa., is handling arrangements.
