STONYCREEK TOWNSHIP — RAGER – Charles Duane, Stonycreek Township, Johnstown, died June 30, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center. Born May 6, 1929, in Johnstown, native of New Florence, son of the late Harvey Blair and Edna Marie (McCabe) Rager. Duane was the beloved husband of Marlene L. (Schmidt) Rager, whom he married Sept. 11, 1954; and the beloved father of Daniel Duane Rager, his wife, Lynne Rager, Sugar Land, Texas; and daughter, Lisa Marie Rager, Johnstown. Preceded in death by parents; brother, Albert V. “Jock” Rager; and sister, Ruby Shanefelter. Also preceded in death by father- and mother-in-law, Ralph T. and Augusta S. Schmidt. Survived by wife; children; grandchildren, Cody James (Angelica) and Eric Scott Medina and Christine Marie (John) Townsley; great- granddaughter, Cheyenne Daniel Medina; sister-in-law, Inez Rager; and cherished nieces, nephews and friends, including longtime neighbor, Harold E. “Gene” Benford. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Duane worked as an inspector at the Bar, Rod & Wire Division of Bethlehem Steel Corp. and retired after 30 years of service. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and in the U.S. Naval Reserves. Member of Knights of Columbus, VFW and American Legion. Duane was a devoted husband and family man. He and Marlene enjoyed the company of friends and going dancing to the big bands. He and his family spent wonderful summers at Deep Creek Lake, Md., enjoying boating, water skiing and the company of Deep Creek neighbors. He took great pride in teaching family and friends how to water ski. He inherited is father’s love of gardening, and he loved to mow grass, tinker with his collection of lawn mowers, and keep busy with household projects. He took long morning walks through the neighborhood and enjoyed socializing along the way. In the evenings, he and Marlene took walks with their Dachshund and enjoyed the valley view from their front yard. Duane loved friendly bantering with Gene Benford, and the two were often affectionately referred to as the “Grumpy Old Men.” Duane and Deep Creek neighbor, Gene Davis, could often be found working together fixing or building things. Duane was known to help anyone who needed it. He was a gentle person who expressed his love frequently to his family members and friends. He was appreciative of anything that was done for him. Duane was a faithful man who never missed attending Mass even while serving in the Army, working shifts at the mill or during vacation. Duane and Marlene spent winter vacations at their mobile home in Kissimmee, Fla., with friends, Ray and Mary Cunningham. Duane served as a volunteer for the Johnstown Convention & Visitors Bureau, where he enjoyed interacting with visitors at the Inclined Plane Visitor Center. Duane was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Geistown, where Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, the Rev. David S. Peles, officiating. Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at John Henderson Co. Funeral Home, 215 Central Ave., Johnstown. Interment, Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or a charity of your choice. “Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, And let perpetual light shine upon him.”
