ALTOONA — HEISS – Francis Xavier “Frank,” died Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at James E. Van Zandt Medical Center, Altoona. He was born Dec. 2, 1922, in Duncansville, son of the late Paul and Caroline (Brunner) Heiss. He was preceded in death by his only daughter, Shirley Jean Anderson, in 2007, and is the last surviving of 13 children.  He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rita A. Willebran; son-in-law, John “Jay” Anderson, Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Keith (Megan) and Timothy (Brooke); and great- grandchildren, Carys, Cormac, Bennett, Stewart and Mazzie.  Mr. Heiss proudly served his country in World War II in both the European and Pacific theaters as a decorated member of the 911 Field Artillery Battalion. He retired in 1987 from Berwind-White Railway Repair in Hollidaysburg, but enjoyed a full second career as the owner/operator of Heiss Power Equipment Sales and Repair in Munster for 24 years. Mr. Heiss was a member of the Cresson and Gallitzin American Legion posts and the Sankertown VFW. He also was a member and past president of the Cresson Lions Club and St. Michaels Men’s Club.  He was a dedicated and active member of Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Loretto. Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Gibbons Funeral Home, 301 Church St., Gallitzin. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel, Loretto, the Rev. Msgr. Timothy Swope, celebrant. Committal, church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Michael’s Parish, Loretto, in Frank’s memory. Military rites by Sankertown VFW, Cresson and Gallitzin American Legion posts and other local military organizations.
