JOHNSTOWN — HARRIS – Clement Frederick, 96, died at home June 25, 2013. Born Nov. 24, 1916, in Johnstown, son of the late James R. Harris and Ada (Nichols) Harris. Preceded in death by wife, Mary Jane (Crouse) “Mickey” Harris, whom he married in 1944. They were married for 68 years. Also preceded in death by sister, Edna Louise (Harris) Wisor, and husband, Ralph Wisor, and their son, Barry F. Wisor; father- and mother-in-law, David and Mildred (Adams) Crouse; and brother-in-law, David Crouse Jr. and wife, Jean (Johnson) Crouse. Survived by daughter, Virginia A. Harris, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and son, Dr. James R. Harris II, Chicago, Ill. Also survived by cousins, James Quest, and wife, the former Leslie Reimer, Ithaca, N.Y.; and Charles Heider, Lander, Wyo., and their families. Also survived by family friends, Shirley J. Titus and Claire B. Sullivan, Atlanta, Ga.; Mark Winer, St. Louis, Mo.; George Allen, Chicago, Ill.; caregiver and friend, Sylvia Widmar, Dilltown; and by close friends, the Meredith family, including Frances Meredith, Debbie Gilbert and Kathy and Sam Harp. Survived by loyal canine friend and devoted companion, Sadie. Clem was a 1934 graduate of Johnstown High School and attended Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He attended Chicago Institute of Baking, Chicago, Ill. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, European Theater, having served in the 3rd Army, 90th Infantry Division, 915th Field Artillery Battalion, and traveled through France, Germany and Czechoslovakia. He was in the English Channel for D+4. Mr. Harris was president and general manager of Harris-Boyer Baking Co. in Morrellville, founded in 1894 by his grandfather, Clement H. Harris. He was responsible for the design of the Gob logo and its marketing. Under his leadership, the bakery introduced Bunny Bread in 1965. He also was a past member of Johnstown Rotary International and Sunnehanna Country Club, having served on the board of directors of Lee Hospital, U.S. National Bank, Goodwill Industries, Arbutus Park Manor and American Baking Cooperative. Member of Franklin Street United Methodist Church for more than 65 years, where he managed the Kring Fund, which loaned money for college scholarships and served on numerous committees. Clem spent time traveling with his wife, Mickey, throughout the United States and the world. He enjoyed working the N.Y. Times crossword puzzle; walking his Jack Russell Terrier, Sadie; playing bridge; and watching sports events, particularly the Pittsburgh Pirates. He and his late wife enjoyed entertaining and hosted many dinner parties, holiday events and election and Super Bowl parties. In his later years, he spent many hours with his Web TV and Kindle Fire. The Harris family is grateful for the services and staff available to him through Allegheny Lutheran Social Ministries and Allegheny Lutheran Home of Johnstown. In his final months, they were very appreciative of the creative caregiving by Heidi Richard, Interim Healthcare and the devoted care of Debbie Gilbert. Friends will be received from 12:30 p.m. until time of funeral service at 2 p.m. Saturday at Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary Inc., 921 Menoher Blvd., the Rev. Bruce Griffith, officiating.
