BEDFORD — BROWN – Ruth Virginia, 88, South Juliana Street, Bedford, died Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Bedford Colonial Courtyard. Born Sept. 25, 1924, in Wilmore, daughter of the late Victor and Alberta (Smith) Beyer. On June 26, 1946, she married Edward J. Brown, who preceded her in death on May 5, 2010. Survived by the following family: son, Richard L. Brown, San Francisco, Calif.; daughter, Linda M., wife of James R. Sproat, Raleigh, N.C.;, daughter, Joanne L., wife of Raymond M. Lyons, Sarasota, Fla.; son, James A. Brown, married to the former Beverly Ake, Osterburg; son, Edward J. Brown Jr., married to the former Theresa Harvey, Muncy; son, John J. Brown, married to the former Sandra Masterson, Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va.; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; brother, Father Leroy Beyer, New Germany; sisters, Helen Brown, and husband, Irvan, Coudersport; Loraine Beyer; and Ida May Spaid, widow of Sarge Spaid, both of Portage; and Alma, and husband, Michael Rounds, Denver, Colo.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph; sister, Dorothy Trimble-Urich; brother, Russell Beyer; and granddaughter, Julia Brown. Ruth was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, where she served as Eucharistic minister and was a member of the ladies guild. She received her bachelor’s and master’s of education degrees from Penn State University, and taught for the Bedford School Area District, Harrison-Manns Choice Elementary and Bedford Middle School. She was a member of Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR), having served as membership chairperson and newsletter editor for many years; Penn State Alumni Association; Phi Delta Kappa; American Legion auxiliary; Bedford Grange; and Wally Byam Airsteam Caravan Club. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 13, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Bedford, Father Richard Tomkosky, celebrant. Burial, St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, Bedford, with vigil for the deceased at 2 p.m. Our online guest book is available at
