Edward Semich

ADAMS TOWNSHIP — SEMICH – Edward, 91, passed away at his home in Adams Township Monday, March 31, 2014. Born Sept. 17, 1922, in Parkhill, to Anton Semich and Jennie Mahorcic. Preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters and in-laws, Dorothy and Victor Dremely, Jen and John Sefko, Veda and Tony Shaffer, Mary Semich and Albert Meglich. Survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Alverda Valentine; children, Donna Allen, DVM (Rodney Brock), Louisville, Ky.; and Neal Semich (Dawn Grusnick), Fredericksburg, Va.; and grandson, Matthew Semich. Also survived by brother, Adolph, Parkhill; sister, Martha Meglich, Parma, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ed graduated from East Conemaugh High School in 1939 and the University of Pittsburgh in 1950, with a degree in mining engineering. After high school, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and served for two years at Camp Kooser in Somerset County and Malta, Mont. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942, and was assigned to the Air Transportation Command (ATC), North Atlantic Wing. While with the ATC, he served at Grenier Field in New Hampshire and in the Azore Islands. He worked for Texas Eastern Transmission Corp., now Spectra Energy, from 1951 until his retirement in 1985. During his employment with Texas Eastern, he and his family lived in Altoona and West Chester, Pa.; Seymore, Ind.; and Lebanon, Tenn. In 1992, he and Alverda returned to the Johnstown area. During retirement, Ed enjoyed spending time with his family, tinkering with home improvement projects and especially volunteering at Laurel Hill State Park building birdhouses with the children and preserving the history of the CCC. Member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Salix, and Goodwill Sunday School Class. Memorial donations may be made to the church. Viewing will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Henderson Funeral Home, East Hills, 2503 Bedford St. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethel United Methodist Church, Salix, the Rev. Don Poole. Entombment, Grandview Mausoleum, where military rites will be conducted by St. Michael Post 551 American Legion.
