Rosalie Augusta (Miller) Beatty

TIRE HILL — BEATTY – Rosalie Augusta (Miller), 87, Tire Hill, died peacefully Monday, May 20, 2013, at Conemaugh Memorial Palliative Care Unit. Born July 17, 1925, in Bellefonte, beloved daughter of Martin and Iona Miller of Bellefonte. Preceded in death by parents; brothers, James and William; sisters, Catherine and Sister Mary Elsie, IHM; and husband, William W. Beatty, and their son, Jim. Rosalie is survived by children, Tom, married to Laurie, Aurora, Ill.; Trish, Hollsopple; Jack, married to Anna, Hummelstown, Pa.; Richard, Tire Hill; Anne, married to Rudy Pernell, Nashville, Tenn.; Mary, married to Eric Hvezda, Clarks Green, Pa.; and Bob, married to Shirley, Fort Worth, Texas. Also survived by grandchildren, Tom, Brian, Dennis and Roy Beatty; Sarah Burkhart and Kurt Beatty; Dustin and Colin Beatty; Kelly Clark, Maggie Rose and Tess Mignot Beatty; Audrey and Robert Pernell; and Gabriel Mazzotti; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Also survived by her beloved friend and sister-in-law, Eleanor Miller; nieces, Katie Rung and Deb Downing; and nephew, Martin Miller. Rosalie attended Marywood College, where she studied music education, and taught for a year in Boston before marrying and starting her large family. Her home was filled with music during the years when she earned a gratifying reputation as a concert soprano, performing occasionally with the Johnstown Symphony, and giving recitals with the late Edward Harris. She resumed her teaching career in 1969, and spent many happy years pouring good music into the minds of high-spirited young learners in the Greater Johnstown elementary schools. Rosalie worked tirelessly all her adult life to improve and expand the role of music in the church. Here in Johnstown, she was an organist and/or directed choirs at St. Columba, St. Rochus, St. Anne, St. Andrew, Church of the Visitation and St. Clare of Assisi, and, on occasion, just about everywhere else. She was a founder of Altoona-Johnstown chapter of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, and this gave her much satisfaction and many cherished friendships over the years. Rosalie loved books, world travel and liberal politics, and made great scratch soups. She had a wicked sense of humor, tremendous generosity to friends and strangers alike, and a warm radiant smile. She kept her troubles to herself, never complained, and will be sadly missed and cherished forever by the family she has left behind. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, at George E. Mason Funeral Home Inc., Davidsville. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 23, at St. Clare of Assisi Parish, Johnstown. Donations in Rosalie’s memory may be made to Carmelite Community of the Word, 394 Bem Road, Gallitzin, Pa. 16641,  814-886-4098 or Conemaugh Regional Hospice, 315 Locust St., Suite SE, Johnstown, Pa. 15901, 888-553-5503.
