FLORIDA — BILLMAN – Charles M. Jr. “Chuck,” a wonderful, quiet and gentle man took off on his final mission March 15, 2013, having fought a valiant – but blessedly brief – battle with brain cancer. Chuck joined up in heavenly formation with his eldest son, Garry. His runway was his own bed in his home. His take off was peaceful and quick. During his 22-year-career in the U.S. Air Force, he flew the T-33 Shooting Star, the F-86 Sabrejet, the T-39 Sabreliner and the OV-10 Bronco. But his favorite airplane and the one in which he logged the most hours and flew in Southeast Asia was the F-100 Super Sabre. Among his decorations are the Distinguished Flying Cross and 10 Air Medals. After his retirement from the U.S. Air Force, Chuck made St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Island his home for 18 years. There he served as chief pilot with Antilles Airboats flying the Grumman Goose and the Mallard. He then joined two friends forming another inter-island airline: Sunaire. As Sunaire’s president and COO, he steered Sunaire through many turbulent times, including Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Survived by his widow, Pat (the former Patty Mayer of Johnstown); son, Gregg (Dania); and grandchildren, Nick, Erin Dan, Brooke and Becca. Also survived by daughter-in-law, Mary Billman (widow of his eldest son, Garry, who predeceased him by six years). When a pilot passes, it is said he “goes west” (as into the sunset). A “gone west” memorial service was held March 23 at Patrick Air Force Base Chapel, Satellite Beach, Fla. Pat and Gregg continue to live in Satellite Beach, Fla. – from which Chuck “went west.”
