George Francis Palmer

PITTSBURGH — PALMER – George Francis, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013. Born May 29, 1921. He is survived by Mary Jane Palmer, his wife of 70 years; his four sons, Jerry (Mary), Larry (Sandy), Mark (Patty) and Kevin (Mariann); 14 grandchildren, Natalie Sandi, Meredith Keller, Kelly Palmer, Amey Palmer, Ryan Palmer, MaryClare Palmer, Kristin Palmer, Kevin Palmer, Mike Palmer, Joe Palmer, Patrick Palmer, Jimmy Palmer, Matt Palmer and Megan Palmer; and five great-grandchildren, Kylie Palmer Hewitt, Teagan Keller, Sophie Keller, Tyler Palmer Plienis and Cole Palmer Romeo. He also is survived by sisters, Doris Terek, Patricia Huff and Kathleen Daniels. George was preceded in death by his parents, John and June Palmer; his sisters, Betty Bimle and Pauline Cook; and his brother, Jack Palmer. George was a native of Johnstown and he moved to Pittsburgh in 1947 to complete his college education at the University of Pittsburgh. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. George will be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather by his family. He was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan and is one of a possible total of 36, 683 Pittsburgh sports fans who can truthfully say that they were at Forbes Field on Oct. 13, 1960, attending Game 7 of the 1960 World Series and saw Bill Mazeroski’s walk-off home run, and were also at Three Rivers Stadium on Dec. 23, 1972, attending the AFC divisional playoff game and saw the Immaculate Reception. During the last years of his life, George was a resident of Asbury Place. George’s family wishes to acknowledge and thank the caring staff of Asbury Place for the assistance they provided to George and his family. Friends welcome from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at William Slater Funeral Service, 1650 Greentree Road, Scott Township. (412) 563-2800.
