JOHNSTOWN — NAPOLITAN – Richard A., 85, Johnstown, passed away Monday, Oct. 28, 2013. Best known locally as “Nappy,” he was a lifelong Johnstown resident, teaching music for more than 30 years and performing more than a 7-decade span. Nappy was born May 17, 1928, and was a 1947 graduate of Johnstown High School. In 1956, he received a bachelor’s degree in music education from the Indiana State Teachers College, and began his teaching career at Garfield Junior High School, where he met his wife, Jeanne Cassidy, whom he married in 1963. In 1961, he received a master’s degree in music education from Duquesne University, and in 1972, he took a position at Greater Johnstown Vo-Tech, where he taught for the next 15 years. During his time at GJVT, he became very involved in musical theater and produced and directed 10 shows. He retired from GJVT in 1987, but returned to teaching in the 1990s to become the choir director at Bishop McCort High School. In addition to his school teaching positions, he also was an instructor at the Pennsylvania Governor’s School of the Arts, featured in Who’s Who America’s Teachers and directed the Our Mother of Sorrows church choir for 30 years. Nappy also was a well-known jazz drummer and vibraphone player, having performed with the Johnstown Jazz Workshop, Stan Kenton, Group 4, Celebration, Good Vibes, Jazz in Your Face and River City Brass Band. Preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne. Survived by son, Richard C. Napolitan; daughter, A.J. Napolitan; sister, Patricia Rice; and grandchildren, JonBrandon Mullholand, Taylor Mulholland, Jayden Campbell and Aiyanna Campbell. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm, Friday at Frank Duca Funeral Home, Westmont Chapel, 1622 Menoher Blvd. Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Resurrection Church, Father Alan Thomas.
