Lester A. Lape

JENNER TOWNSHIP — LAPE – Lester A., 94, Lape Road, Jenner Township, Somerset County, went to be with the Lord Feb. 28, 2014, at his home. Born April 2, 1919, in Sipesville, son of Milton H. and Olive B. (Adams) Lape. Preceded in death by parents; son, Alan; infant brother, Floyd; brothers-in-law, Jimmy and Charles Mimna; and sister-in-law, Patty McCall. Survived by wife of 68 years, Mary Jane (Mimna), whom he married on Feb. 17, 1946; daughter, Bonnie Lou, married to Dale E. Lape, Friedens; granddaughters, Luwana, married to Bruce Williams, Windber; and Lucinda, married to Chris Furry, Mount Crawford, Va.; great-grandson, Seth Furry; three stepgreat-grandsons; five stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Virginia Snider, Somerset. A 1936 graduate of Somerset High School. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served as a sergeant, First Class in the 6th Armored Division under General George Patton in the European Theater. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, two Bronze stars for bravery in action and the European Services Medal with five stars. Retired dairy farmer in Jenner Township and a rural mail carrier on the Friedens route for 27 1/2 years. Former 4-H Club leader and milk tester in Somerset County. Member of Somerset Alliance Church, where he served on the governing board and finance committee for a number of years and was chaplain of Keenagers Senior Citizens. Also a member of Holstein-Friesan Association, Somerset County Rural Mail Carriers Association, Somerset Post 554 VFW and Gideons International Somerset Chapter. He greatly loved the Lord and served as a speaker in many churches throughout Somerset County and assisted in the placing of God’s Word through the Gideons. Lester loved serving his country and would speak to many groups about his experiences during World War II. He was an avid wood cutter and bird watcher and die-hard St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice for their compassionate service during Lester’s illness. Viewing will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 409 Main St., Boswell. Viewing also will be held from 10 a.m. until time of celebration of life service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Somerset Alliance Church with Pastors Sherman Berkey and James Cameron. Interment, Christ Casebeer Cemetery, Somerset, with military rites by Somerset County Honor Guard. Donations in Lester’s name may be given to Gideons International, P.O.
