OHIO — PATTERSON – Samuel B. Jr., 93, passed away Friday, March 22, 2013, in Mount Gilead, Ohio. Born March 5, 1920, in West Virginia, son of the late Samuel B. Sr. and Ethel V. (Lambing) Patterson. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to central Pennsylvania. He had a short childhood, leaving school and going to work soon after the eighth grade. During this phase of his life, he worked at several jobs until he enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Following his discharge from the military, he spent his working career in “the woods.” Over time, he became the owner and operator of Patterson Lumber & Supply in Mundys Corner. He thoroughly enjoyed his business; but when he was not at his shop, he took meticulous care of the yard around his home. He always found great satisfaction in a job well done. Everyone on the Hill knew of his passion for baseball, scratch off lottery tickets and gatherings of friends – whether the gathering consisted of just one guest or everyone in the neighborhood. No one was a stranger after they had met him. His life was styled as a “realistic optimist”; living by the motto “… Don’t worry about yesterday, it’s over … don’t worry about tomorrow, it may never come … today is all you’ve got.” On Nov. 20, 1948, Sam married the love of his life, Margaret M. Petro, in Portage. Samuel is survived by children, Samuel B. (Lillian) Patterson III, Waynesboro, Pa.; and Christine (Tim) Clapper, Mount Gilead, Ohio; grandchildren, Samuel B. (Mary) Patterson IV, Steven Patterson, Matthew (Laura) Clapper, Michael (Molly) Clapper and Nathan (Shannon) Clapper; and great-grandchildren, Cassidy, Nicolas, Delilah, Gavin, Meaghan, Mikenzee, Memphis and Brynn Marie. Preceded in death by beloved wife, Margaret M. Patterson; parents; and siblings, Dan and Bill Patterson. A celebration of the time he shared with us will be held during Memorial Day weekend in Pennsylvania. Snyder Funeral Home of Mount Gilead, Ohio, is honored to have been chosen to serve Samuel’s family and your private condolences may be expressed to them by visiting www.snyderfuneralhomes.com.
