FLAGSTAFF, ARIZ. — DURHAM – Jean Ellen, 81, Flagstaff, Ariz., passed away peacefully Feb. 28, 2014. Jean began her journey in Johnstown on Aug. 28, 1932. She developed a love for music, which continued throughout her life. She played the violin in school and eventually played for the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra. In 1960, Jean, her husband and three children moved to Phoenix, where they had three more children. Jean’s six children were the light of her life. She gave her unconditional love as a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was a friend to many. In the mid ’70s, Jean met her second husband, Claude M. Durham. Jean and Claude enjoyed spending time with their friends and family at their cabin in Colorado. In 1996, Jean and Claude moved to Flagstaff, Ariz., where they loved the mountain life. Jean was an avid naturalist whose love of Arizona led her to explore every bit of the state and inspired future generations of her family by teaching them to appreciate and explore on their own. Jean learned to play the guitar and ukulele and spent many nights singing around the campfire with her family and friends. Her hobbies included crochet (200-plus afghans), gardening, watching movies and playing games. She loved her flowers, especially the hollyhocks and tulips. Jean loved life and will be greatly missed. Preceding her in death are her parents, James “Ted” and Mary Ellen Hoover, and her husband, Claude M. Durham. She is survived by her six children, Beth Humphreys, Patti Shannon, Lynn Loisel, Lisa (Paul) Wilde, David Humphreys and Susan Davis; brothers, James (Phyllis) Hoover and Robert (Diana) Hoover; five stepchildren; 23 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 10 nieces and nephews. Donations can be made on Jean’s behalf to Northland Hospice, P.O. Box 997, Flagstaff, Ariz. 86001. Condolences can be sent to www.norvelowensmortuary.com.
