Eli Pekich

JOHNSTOWN — PEKICH – Eli, 93, Johnstown, died Feb. 20, 2014, at Siemon’s Lakeview Manor, Somerset. Born July 20, 1920, in Cambria City, Johnstown, son of Dragich and Julia (Verbjar) Pekich. Preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Pearl Simko and Mary Slisz; and brothers, Ted, Pete, Stanley and Nicholas Pekich. Survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy (Piljay) Pekich; son, Dr. Eli Jr., married to the former Dr. Irina Mikityanskaya; and daughter, Darnella, wife of Joseph Parker, both of Johnstown; grandchildren, Michael Parker; Jennifer (Parker) Link; and Chloe, Elle and Elizabeth Pekich; and great-grandchildren, Estella and Isaac Parker and Hunter Link. Member of St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church, where he was a member of the Serbian String Ensemble, Serbian Church Singing Society, director of the choir for five years and director of the children’s choir. He also was the leader of a Tamburitzan band that played at local church events. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Eli was retired from the Pennsylvania Wine & Spirits stores as a manager and president of Cambria and Somerset County Chapter of the Liquor Store Union; and former volunteer for the American Red Cross, where he delivered blood and was recognized for his volunteer service. Eli was an excellent musician that played bass in many of the local bands. He was a devout husband, father and grandfather. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home Inc., 710 Broad St., where Pomen will be sung at 7 p.m. A prayer service will be held 9:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. funeral service at St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church, Father Dragan Zarac. Committal, Grandview Cemetery with military honors by the VFW Menoher Post 155 Ritual Team. Condolences can be sent to the family at ozogfh.com.
