PORTAGE — WOODS – Mrs. Lila Ruth (Hooker), went to be with the Lord June 21, 2013. The Virginia native, a resident of Portage since 1972, was 91. Ruth was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. One of the great joys in her life was to have her family around her, and her smile was at its widest when she could look around a room and see many of her loved ones at once. One of the last great celebrations in her life was her 91st birthday party, not because it was about her, but because it brought so much of her family together in one place. A devout Methodist, Ruth was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Portage, where she also was a part of the United Methodist Women. Her faith was essential to her happiness and peace of mind, and as she anticipated her last days she carefully chose the Scripture and hymns that she wanted to help carry her home. Ruth was born March 26, 1922, in Jewell Ridge, Va., daughter of George Crockett Hooker and Ida Merle (Steele) Hooker, both deceased. Her siblings include the late Kenneth Hooker (Christine); Frieda Miller, Greenville, S.C.; and Harry Hooker (Judy), Brandon, Fla. Her husband, Blaine Eugene Woods, preceded her in death in 1997. With her husband, she had three children, Ronald (Pat) Woods, Portage; Connie (Rich) Heldenfels, Mogadore, Ohio; and Clarke (Kim) Woods, Harrisburg. They in turn blessed her with seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Jean H. Kinley Funeral Home, Portage. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church, the Rev. Michael Long, officiating. Interment, Forest Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family asked contributions be made to Trinity United Methodist Church. Online condolences may be expressed at kinleyfuneralhome.com.
