Duane R. Smith

HARRISBURG — SMITH – Retired BG (MG/PA) Duane R., 86, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at Holy Spirit Hospital. Born Nov. 7, 1927, in Johnstown, son of Olivaine and Martha Waehner Smith. He graduated from Johnstown High School in 1945. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania; and MEd and DEd from the University of Pittsburgh. He was named an outstanding alumnus of IUP in 1986. Duane completed a 38-year military career in 1985 with the rank of brigadier general as assistant division commander, 28th Infantry Division, Pennsylvania Army National Guard. He worked in public education retiring from the position of associate dean and provost of Pennsylvania State University Harrisburg in 1987. Predeceased by his sister, Elaine Baker; and two siblings in early childhood. Survived by his wife, Joanne Sheehan Smith; his children, Janet S. Peterman (D. Kent Peterman), Susan M. Smith, Ronald D. Smith and Alan P. Smith (Mardi M. Smith); and grandchildren, Phoebe (Adam Safer), Neil (Mara Renz) and Nathaniel Peterman; and Grant and Jordan Smith. Also survived by his sister, Roxine (Charles Shields); and brother-in-law, Gordon Baker. Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12, at Tree of Life Lutheran Church, 1492 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, Pa. 17110, where visitation with the family will be held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers, friends may send contributions to Tree of Life Lutheran Church or Messiah Village/Messiah Lifeways Development Fund, 100 Mount Allen Drive, Mechanicsburg, Pa. 17055.
