Preceded in death by his parents; many brothers, including Father Anthony Choby and Dr. Joe Choby; and many sisters. He is the last of nine children. His father came to his country in 1904 from what was then the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. His great-grandfather was in the personal army of  then Emperor Frans Joseph. He learned other languages from his parents, which served him well later as a practicing dentist on Strayer Street in Johnstown. He finished his bachelor’s degree in history at St. Francis College. His brothers, particularly Father Anthony Choby, persuaded him to pursue dentistry, which he did at the University of Pittsburgh. He graduated as a dentist in 1936. He joined the U.S. Navy and was a lieutenant commander during World War II. After this, he married and settled for many years in the house he designed and built in Westmont. He just recently became a resident, along with his wife, Helen, at Bethlen Homes in Ligonier. His many hobbies include hunting timber doodles (American woodcock) with his Brittany spaniels. He enjoyed the outdoors and has had many pleasant memories making nests for blue birds. Later, he developed his culinary skills making pies and cookies for many family members, but particularly for his wife, Helen. He will be missed. He was an adult choir member and longtime member of Our Mother of Sorrows Church, where funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, the Very Rev. Mark S. Begly.
