Rudy F. Dragovich

WEST TAYLOR TOWNSHIP — DRAGOVICH – Rudy F., 88, West Taylor Township, died Feb. 17, 2013, at LaurelWood Care Center.  Born Feb. 4, 1925, in Johnstown, son of Nicholas and Mary (Froehlich) Dragovich. Preceded in death by parents; wife, Genevieve “Jenny” (Walko) Dragovich, whom he married May 25, 1948, she passed away Oct. 18, 2008, ending 60 years of marriage; brothers, Michael, Charles and Andrew Dragovich; and sister, Mary Kondash. Last survivor of his immediate family.  Survived by his loving children, David, married to the former Beth Dusch, Munhall; Richard, married to the former Peggy Kacian, Carlisle; Nick Dragovich, Johnstown; and Genevieve Orner, wife of Bradley Orner, Johnstown. Also survived by grandchildren, Joseph, married to the former Jessie Wong, Cardiff, England; Amy Wyman, wife of Chris Wyman, York; and Lucas Dragovich, Johnstown;  and great-grandson, James Wyman. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Enlisted in the U.S. Navy after graduating from Johnstown Central Catholic High School in 1943. He participated in numerous battles against the Japanese in the South Pacific during World War II. Most notably the Battle of Tarawa, Iwo Jima and Okinawa, where he was wounded after his ship, the USS Terror, was attacked by an enemy Kamikaze plane. He was later awarded the Purple Heart. After his recovery, he was aboard the USS Missouri and witnessed the official surrender of Japan and the signing of the Peace Treaty. Honorably discharged in 1946, he remained with the U.S. Navy as a reservist and was called to active duty in 1950 aboard the USS Breckenridge during the Korean Conflict and participated in the invasion of Hungnam Korea. His service medals include: Asiatic Pacific Theater with four Battle Stars, Philippine Liberation, Anti-Submarine Warfare, World War II Japanese Occupation, World War II Victory, American Campaign, Korean Naval Campaign with two Battle Stars, UN Korean Service and the Purple Heart. He remained in the Naval Reserves until he retired as a chief warrant officer 4 on May 1, 1985.  He retired after 37 years of service for Bethlehem Steel Corp. at the Rod and Wire Division as a wire drawer. A member of the VFW Post 155 Ritual Team, the Korean War Veterans Association and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly 954. He was an avid golfer and member of the Pleasant Valley Golf Course, where he made a hole-in-one on April 20, 1987. Former member of the Westmont Retired Men’s Bowling League. Rudy was a true gentleman to the end. He was a wonderful, loving husband, father, grandpap and great-grandpap and will be remembered and missed by all who knew and loved him. As a proud and devout Roman Catholic, he was a member of  St. Therese Catholic Church, where he was an usher and member of the Holy Name Society. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday  at St. Therese Church, the Rev. Bernard Karmonocky, OFM. Committal, Grandview Cemetery, where VFW Post 155 Ritual Team will perform military honors. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home Inc., Broad Street. Condolences may be sent at ozogfh.com.
