Born Oct. 15, 1927, in Johnstown, daughter of the late Thomas W. and Cora (Noel) Simonton. Preceded in death by husband, Thomas; stepfather; three sisters; and one brother. Survived by these children: Lucinda, wife of Joseph Ford, Bedford; Thomas R., Johnstown; and Woody, Everett; also two grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren; and one niece and two nephews. Member of the Franklin Street United Methodist Church, Johnstown. Mrs. Espey was a retired custodian of the Pa. State Police Barracks in Bedford. At Mrs. Espey's request, there will be no viewing or visitation. A memorial service will be held at the Everett United Methodist Church on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 10 a.m., the Rev. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Melvin was affiliated with the Christian -- Missionary Alliance Church and a member of the NRA. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Preceded in death by her mother. Survived by her father; stepfather, Chester Dietz; loving husband, Donald Sheldon, with whom she celebrated 48 years of marriage; children, Kimberly, married to David Cobaugh, Indiana, Pa., and Donald Sheldon II, Waymart, Pa.; grandchildren, Kyle and Nathaniel Cobaugh; Donald and Nicole Sheldon; and Virginia Stevens; great-grandchildren, Tyler Sheldon; Asher Cobaugh; Christian and Dillon Stevens; numerous nieces and nephews; and two stepbrothers, Dave Ullery and Harry Ullery Jr. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Conemaugh. She enjoyed going to the beach, shopping and especially enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. She was a beloved mother, wife and grandmother and will be sadly missed by all. SMITH - Father Ermin R. Smith
SMITH - Father Ermin R. Smith, O.S.B., a monk of St. Vincent Archabbey, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, after a long illness. He was 88 years old. Father Ermin was born in New Germany, Pa., on Feb. 7, 1917, the son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Long) Smith. He was one of 12 children. He was predeceased by six brothers: Vincent, Clement, Cletus, Benno, Thomas and Father Julian Smith, O.S.B., who was also a Benedictine of Saint Vincent Archabbey; and three sisters: Mary Chirdon, Sister M. Basil Smith, R.S.M., and Sister M. Matthew Smith, R.S.M. Surviving are two sisters, Elizabeth Ryan and Helen Smith of Florida. He attended Wilmore Public Grade School, New Germany, and is a 1937 graduate of St. Vincent Preparatory School. He received a bachelor of arts degree from St. Vincent College in 1943, and a master of arts degree from St. Vincent Seminary in 1945. He also did graduate study in theology at the University of Notre Dame. Father Ermin entered the Benedictine monastic community of St. Vincent Archabbey in 1939. He made simple profession of vows on July 2, 1940, and solemn profession of vows on July 11, 1943. He was ordained a priest in St. Vincent Archabbey Church by the late Hugh C. Boyle, bishop of Pittsburgh, on Nov. 4, 1945. He served the Archabbey in a variety of positions. He served on the faculty of St. Emma Military Academy, Belmead, Va. (1945-1947); was prefect and teacher at St. Vincent Preparatory School (1947-1948) as well as St. Vincent Scholasticate (1948-1952). He was vice rector of St. Vincent Seminary (1952-1955); professor at St. Vincent College (1960-1966) and professor at St. Vincent Seminary (1954-1960, 1974-1980), as well as spiritual director at the Seminary (1974-1980). He was socius of clerics (1955-1961) and master of novices (1961-1966) at the Archabbey. From 1967 to 1973, he was stationed at S-o Bento Priory in Vinhedo, Brazil, serving as novice master and subprior and teaching religion. He was appointed chaplain at Latrobe Area Hospital in 1980, where he served until his retirement in 1999. Father Ermin's body will be received at the Elizabeth Roderick Center, St. Vincent Archabbey, on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, at 2 p.m. Viewing will be held in the parlor of the Roderick Center from 2 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19. The body will be transferred to the Basilica for the Vigil Service at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, where his body will lie in state until 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the St. Vincent Archabbey Basilica at 2 p.m. Friday. Interment will follow at St. Vincent Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Benedictine Health and Education Fund at St. Vincent Archabbey, 300 Fraser Purchase Road, Latrobe, Pa. 15650.
