CLARE - Beth, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Johnstown, passed away on July 3, 2006. Beth is survived by her husband, Dr. Sheldon Clare; her sister, Joan Bernstein; by sons, Andrew (Julie) and Joseph (Susie) Clare; daughter, Ellen (Isaac) Slobodnik; also by grandchildren, Joshua, Daniel, Codi and Ty; and sister-in-law and husband, Patti and Sandy Berman. She was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Rapoport. Beth was born on June 5, 1941, to Samuel and Eva Rapoport and received her teaching degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Beth and Sheldon, teachers by trade, set up a learning environment for everyone they touched. The life lessons left by Beth are an outstanding legacy that will be passed from generation to generation. By working with nursery school children, Beth was able to start solid foundations for countless lives. A wonderfully caring woman, she was actively involved with Congregations Beth Shalom (Johnstown) and Ner Tamid (Tucson). In each, she served with distinction as a board member. She also volunteered at the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank and at a local elementary school. Beth will be missed by all who knew her. Services were held in Pittsburgh at Ralph Schugar Funeral Chapel on July 7, 2006, with interment in Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown. GOLOB - Joseph Jerry
GOLOB - Joseph Jerry, 88, formerly of Johnstown and residing in Sandusky, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly Friday, July 7, 2006, at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Main Campus, Sandusky. He was born Nov. 16, 1917, in Johnstown, to Joseph and Theresa (Pozenel) Golob, and grew up in Coopersdale. He attended Garfield Junior High School and worked at the brickyard in Coopersdale and for Thomas' Flower Shop in Johnstown. He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Morrellville and SNPJ Lodge #3 Adrija in Cambria City. In 1943, he married the former Anne Polosky of Moxham. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Johnstown in 1993. At the outbreak of World War II, the couple moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where both worked in various defense plants. They returned briefly to Johnstown after the war, where Joe owned and operated a Cities Service station on the Johnstown-Windber Rd. Moving back to Cleveland, they settled in Sandusky in 1947. Joseph worked at the New Departure-Hyatt Bearings Division of General Motors as a machine repair machinist for 28 years, retiring in 1975. Joe enjoyed bowling in his earlier years, and, in retirement, enjoyed puttering around his yard, fishing and watching sports and TV westerns. He enjoyed socializing and was known for his smile, good nature and love of corny jokes. Joe loved Slovenian polka music and the couple traveled many places to hear their son, Wayne, perform. In 1983, Joseph and Wayne went to Slovenia, where Joe saw his father's birthplace. Joe was a member of United Auto Workers' Local 913, SS. Peter -- Paul Catholic Church of Sandusky, former member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Elks Lodge of Sandusky and the Lorain (Ohio) Slovenian Club. He is survived by his sister, Josephine Haynal of Johnstown; son, Wayne (Heidi) of Sandusky; brother and sisters-in-law, Joseph and Rose Sernel and Katherine Pasquerilla, all of Geistown; cousins, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne, in 1996; his parents; sisters, Rose, Sophie Pejack and Stenie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday morning, July 13, at 10 a.m. at SS. Peter -- Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Father Tommy Rodrigues will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Sandusky. Arrangements entrusted to the David F. Koch Funeral Home, Sandusky. KRISE - Helen E. (Mihalcik), age 82, of the Quemahoning Towers, Windber, passed away July 9, 2006. Born Dec. 25, 1923, in Windber, daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Bundy) Mihalcik. Preceded in death by parents; husband, Russell M. Krise; brothers, Joseph, William and Robert Mihalcik; sister, Dorothy Domonkos. Survived by these children: William M. Krise, and wife, Jane, Huntingdon, and Nancy L., wife of Michael Nash, Tampa, Fla.; grandchildren, Erica Hahn and Kristin, wife of Jason Leonard, both of Tampa. Sister of Virginia, wife of the late Edward Yocca, Windber; Alice, wife of the late Louis Brunskole, Buffalo, N.Y.; also sister-in-law, Bernice Mihalcik, New York. Retired employee of Bestform Foundations, Windber, with nearly 30 years of service. Member of ILGWU (UNITE). Helen was a very active volunteer at the Quemahoning Towers, where she would have flowers sent for people of the towers, she would call bingo and was in charge of entertainment for birthday parties. LaPORTA - Mildred, 89, formerly of Brownstown Borough, died July 9, 2006, at the Arbutus Manor. Born April 22, 1917, in Johnstown, daughter of Ignatius and Lena (Green) Riek. Preceded in death by parents; husband, James LaPorta; brothers, Charles, Albert, Joseph, Edward, Michael and Fredrick Riek; and sisters, Marie Jordan, Irene Steinkirchner, Magdalene Hahn, Bertha Grimaldi and Agnes Krise. Survived by daughters, Mildred, married to Richard Yuhas, and Kathleen, married to James Popchak, all of Johnstown. Also survived by grandchildren, James Yuhas, married to former Karen Mills; Tammy, married to Brian Helsel; Ryan Yuhas; Melanie, married to Christopher Helfrich; Jill, married to Steve Prosdocimo; and Adam Popchak; and great-grandchildren, Cody Helsel, Sydney Helsel, Taylor Yuhas and Justin Kapcsos. A sister of James Riek, married to the former Anna Mae Gawlas, of Johnstown. "Granny" is also survived by the angels on earth who loved and cared for her at the Arbutus Park Manor Crossroads Unit. Retired employee with 20 years of service for Ferndale School District as a cafeteria worker. Former owner of the Dairy Dell in Westmont and the former LaPorta's Bar. PRESTON - Alice "Olene" Stutzman Boyer Preston, beloved wife and mother, 78, Stoystown, surrendered her soul to the Lord July 9, 2006, at her daughter's home in Bakersville. She was born Aug. 5, 1927, in Stoystown, a daughter of Wilbur C. Brant and Elda Grace Stutzman. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Charles "Lindy" Boyer; and a son-in-law, Donald F. Schrock. Survived by her husband, the Rev. Owen Preston; children, Barry Boyer, and his wife, Judith Ann, Concord, N.C.; Judy Zeigler, and her fiancee, Rick Rosser, Fort Myers, Fla.; Joyce Ditzler Schrock, Bakersville; stepdaughter, Linda Sines, and her husband, David, Oakland, Md.; grandchildren, Melissa, Melinda, Michelle, Michael, Matthew, Jaime and Jeffrey; great-grandchildren, Marissa, Connor, Samuel, Grace and Amaya. Also survived by a sister, Donna Lee Brant. She retired from both Somerset Hospital and the U.S. Post Office, Stoystown, after 30+ years of service, each. WACKER - William H., 79, Riverside, joined his beloved wife, Dee, on July 9, 2006. Born June 12, 1927, in Johnstown, son of the late Henry and Ida (Steeg) Wacker. In addition to his wife, Bill was preceded in death by brothers, Henry George, Albert, Richard and Benjamin. Survived by daughters, Carol, married to Bruce Peterson, Summerland Key, Fla.; Debra, married to Timothy Moore, Bloomington, Ind.; and Sandra, married to Jeff Packech, Mill Hall; five grandchildren. Brother of Mildred Sass, Richland, and Esther Zips, Johnstown. Bill retired from U.S. Steel after 37 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ. A graduate of Ferndale High School, he then attended Pennsylvania Military College. He was a World War II and Korean Army veteran. He was a past director and treasurer of the Riverside Volunteer Fire Company, where Bill designed and engineered the construction of the fire hall. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary Inc., West Hills, 921 Menoher Blvd., where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, the Rev.
