Anthony C. Muto

JOHNSTOWN — MUTO – Anthony C., 95, passed away May 15, 2014, at LaurelWood Care Center. Born Jan. 25, 1919, in Johnstown, son of Michael and Josephine (Guzzi-Piro) Muto. Preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mildred Muto. Survived by his loving wife, Mary (Halach), whom he married Aug. 22, 1943; son, Michael, married to Joyce (Pankoke); daughter, Tonette, wife of Dominick Furfari; grandchildren, Dena, wife of Todd Vore, Raleigh, N.C.; Marc A. Muto, married to Kristi (Sharp); Anthony M. Muto; Tammi, wife of Eston Mayberry, Chattanooga, Tenn.; Frank Burns; Stefanie, wife of Matthew Whiteside; Travis Burns, married to Sara Beth (Hannah), all of Cleveland, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Summer, Shea, Lacey, Mason, Madox, Kelsie, Aiden, AddieKate, Connor, Cannon, Will and Emmie. Anthony entered the military on Jan. 7, 1942, and was honorable discharge on Dec. 31, 1945. He was in the Battery B. 771st, Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion. He was a heavy machine gunner and served two years in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater in Guam and Saipan. He received the Bronze Star and Good Conduct and Victory medals. He also played the bugler and played for many military events and ceremonies. After the military, he worked as a crane operator in the Gautier Division of Bethlehem Steel until his retirement in 1977. In his retirement, he enjoyed working in his garden and yard, and walking down Prospect Hill and around town. Member of American Legion Post 294, VFW Post 155 and Union Social Club. He was the best father in the world and he took great pride in talking about his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved his wife, Mary, to whom he was married to for 70 years and 9 months. He will be missed by his whole family, who loved him more than words can express. He was and is our eternal hero. Friends received from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Frank Duca Funeral Home, Westmont Chapel, 1622 Menoher Blvd. Funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, Father Matthew Misurda. Interment, St. Anthony Cemetery, Johnstown. A special thank you to Conemaugh Hospice, the staff at LaurelWood Care Center and Dr. Maharajh for their continuous care and generosity that they gave.
