John Nyeste Jr.

EPHRATA — NYESTE – John Jr., 92, formerly of Windber, died Nov. 11, 2012, at Lancaster General Hospital, after his battle with Parkinson’s disease. John resided at Ephrata Manor nursing facility in since 2009. He was one of four children of the late Barbara (Sallai) Nyeste and John Nyeste, Sr. of Windber. Born in Hungary in 1920 and came to this country with his family when he was about 18 months old. John resided in the coal mining town of Windber in southwest Pennsylvania all his life until 2009, when health issues required his move to Ephrata Manor so he could be near two of his three children and their families. John grew up the son of a coal miner, as many in Windber did. He also worked briefly as a coal miner. During those pre-war years, he was a respected amateur boxer in the Johnstown area. He was a World War II veteran, having served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific at Guadalcanal. While in the Marines, he was a U.S. Marine Corps boxing champion. During his service at the U.S. Marine Corps garage in Washington, D.C., he met and married Winona Hein of Ansley, Neb. Following World War II, he co-owned City Brake Service in the Woodvale section of Johnstown with the late Joe Komar, from 1946 until John’s retirement in the early 1980s. John was an early member of Windber Country Club and enjoyed golfing during the club’s formative years. In the 1950s and 1960s, he was an early “Hi-Fi” enthusiast and built an extensive and sophisticated sound system in his house. In the 1960s and 1970s, he owned, built and maintained one of the first local cable TV systems that served his neighborhood. Following his retirement, he enjoyed taking care of his yard and flowers and visiting family members. He will be lovingly missed by his children, John Nyeste, husband of Sheila (Mehalco) Nyeste, Denver, Pa.; Stephanie McClellan, wife of Dennis McClellan, Quarryville, Pa.; and Jacqueline Drefahl, wife of Robert Drefahl, Loranger, La.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his sisters, Bertha Hancharick and Elizabeth “Garbo” Roberson, both of Windber; and brother, Steve Nyeste, Portage. In accordance with John’s wishes, memorial service will be private for the family. Memorial donations are requested to be contributed to Ephrata Manor, 99 Bethany Road, Ephrata, Pa. 17522, whose kind and dedicated staff helped him to enjoy his final years. Service is under the care of Paul L. Gravenor Home For Funerals, Ephrata, Pa. To offer your condolences, please visit
