Sophia Claire Wegrzyn-Werzyn

JOHNSTOWN — WEGRZYN-WERZYN – Sophia Claire, 95, 207 Ottawa St., Johnstown, formerly of Town House Towers and Conemaugh, died Sept. 25, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown. Born Aug. 12, 1918, in Cairnbrook, daughter of Michael Sycz and Mary (Strus) Sycz-Rychak. Preceded in death by parents; stepfather, Stephen Rychak; husband, Walter W.; infant son, Walter; infant daughter, Mary Grace; and siblings, Stella Hajduk, Bertha Tylenda, Louis Sycz, Helen Granville, Joseph Sycz and Cleme Plaza. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survived by children, Barbara “Bonnie,” married to Eugene Kessel; Beverly, married to Calvin Dawson; and Walter W., married to Mary (Stringent), all of Johnstown; William, married to Robin (Reeder), Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; and John, Johnstown; grandchildren, Karen (Kessel), married to Kenneth Kolenik, New Kensington, Pa.; Steven Kessel, married to Katie (McReynolds), Huntersville, N.C.; Calvin Dawson, married to Sue (Gilmore), Windber; Suzanne (Dawson) Ream, married to Don, Shippensburg, Pa.; Jeffrey Dawson, married to Amy (Abel), Pleasant Gap, Pa.; Randy Werzyn, Charlotte, N.C.; Ryan Werzyn, married to Ann (McCarthy), Pittsburgh; B.J. Werzyn, married to P.J. (Katzenstein), Dillsburg, Pa.; and Jeremy Werzyn, married to Amber (Peel), Johnstown; great-grandchildren, Shannon and Lauren Kolenik; Emily Kessel; Holly Dawson; Alyssa and Hayley Ream; Samantha, Jordan and Daniel Dawson; Jack and Leah Werzyn; and Sy Werzyn; and stepgreat-grandson, Seth Coleman. Former member of Polish Heritage Council and Polish Heritage Choir. She was an avid bingo and pinochle player. Former member of Assumption of the BVM Church. Member of St. John Gualbert Catholic Church. Friends received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at Henderson-Makuchan Funeral Home, 434 First St., Conemaugh, where vigil for the deceased will be held. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John Gualbert Catholic Church, Johnstown. Committal, Assumption of the BVM Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sophie’s name may be made to Proclaim Ministries, P.O. Box 807, Johnstown, Pa. 15907, or Arbutus Park Manor, 207 Ottawa St., Johnstown, Pa. 15904.
