Andrew Anthony Kalmanir

WINDBER — KALMANIR – Andrew Anthony, 84, Windber, peacefully passed away Aug. 29, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center. Born Nov. 14, 1928, in Jerome, son of the late Thomas J. and Maria (Oravec) Kalmanir. Preceded in death by parents and brothers, John and Thomas. Survived by wife of 50 years, the former Lillian (Zvolerin) Kalmanir; son, A. Christopher, married to Wendy (Grata), Windber; daughter, Heather M. Grove, Johnstown; beloved grandchildren, Bethany, Tanner and Paige; sisters, Mary Sheets and Helen Martin, Reno, Nev.; and many nieces and nephews. He was a 1946 graduate of Conemaugh Township High School and attended the University of Nevada-Reno and Trinity University of Texas, where he played football and received a bachelor’s degree in secondary education. He began his teaching career at Salisbury High School in 1954, where he also coached basketball and baseball. From 1957 until his retirement in 1985, he taught physical education at Shade-Central City High School, where he served as football, basketball and baseball coach. He also was a PIAA basketball official for 25 years and belonged to the Somerset County Old-Timers Baseball Association, where he was a member of the Hall of Fame, and a member of Johnstown Old-Timers Baseball Association. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Meek & Dalla Valle Funeral Home Inc., Windber, where vigil for the deceased will be held. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Tuesday at SS. Cyril & Methodius Church, Windber, Father George Gulash. Entombment, Richland Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, if it is your wish, a contribution can be made to Somerset County Old-Timers Baseball Association or SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church.
