JOHNSTOWN — SCALETTA– Vito “Charlie,” 88, died Sept. 4, 2013.  Born April 28, 1925, in Johnstown,  son of Sylvester and Catherine (LaPorta) Scaletta. Preceded in death by his parents and brother, Joseph. Survived by loving wife of 68 years, Eva M. (Michlena); children, Sylvester, Johnstown; Charles, and fiancee, Cristine Rosko, Nanty Glo; and Richard, married to Judith (Palmer), Edinboro; grandchildren, Brian, married to Lori, and Anthony, all of Johnstown, and Nicholas, married to Kate, Maryland; great-granddaughter, Adelyn;  numerous nieces and nephews; special niece, Rosie Lamb; and friend, Richard Poole.  Charlie started the 8th Ward Neighborhood Crime Watch. He volunteered at the food pantry at St. Clement Church and at Victim Services Inc., Cerebral Palsy and Conemaugh Hospital. He received the community service “Jefferson Award” in 1994. Charlie served in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II and fought and was wounded in Okinawa, Japan. He received a Purple Heart.  Charlie retired from Conemaugh and Black Lick Railroad Co. He was a longtime member of Visitation BVM Catholic Church, where funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday,  the Rev. Barry J. Baroni. “Whether it is a prevention education program, a shoulder to cry on, a helping hand or even a hug, Charlie would spare nothing to help others.” Friends  received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.  Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, at Frank Duca Funeral Home, Westmont Chapel, 1622 Menoher Blvd., Johnstown, Pa. 15905.  Interment, Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Laurel Highlands Alzheimer’s Foundation, c/o Family Center, 317 Power St., Johnstown, Pa. 15906.
