BOLIVAR — GARLAND – James R., 82, Bolivar, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at his home surrounded by the love and prayers of his family. He was born March 11, 1931, in Tarentum, son of the late James A. and Leora (Muir) Garland. Prior to his retirement in 1993, he had been employed by the former Allegheny Foundry for more than 42 years. He was an active member of the Oak Grove Church of Christ in Ligonier. Jim had owned and operated Jim & Art’s Gun Shop in Bolivar for more than 40 years. He personally designed and built a gun for each of his daughters. He loved to garden and to hunt. He was very supportive of the activities and sports of his grandchildren, especially high school football. He was a member of Local No. 4069 USWA and the NRA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws, James P. and Winifred Hall. Jim is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Gertrude (Hall) Garland; three daughters, Cindy (William) Dillard, Sierra Vista, Ark.; and Lila (John) Saxton, and Polly (Thomas) Petro, both of Bolivar; five grandchildren, Jason (Kathy) Carney, Shelley (Jeff) Lych, Jon Saxton, Michael Petro and Kris Dillard (Kaela); five great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from noon to 2 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the J. Paul McCracken Funeral Chapel Inc., 144 E. Main St., Ligonier. A service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Oak Grove Church of Christ, Ligonier. Interment will follow at Bolivar Westview Cemetery. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Conemaugh Regional Hospice, Citizen’s Ambulance, Beacon Ridge Nursing Center and their friends and neighbors who made it possible to endure during Jim’s long illness.
