Ellen was a compassionate and loving mother and was always on the ready to move and set up a home for us wherever Dad was assigned – Frankfurt, Germany; Paris, France; Giessen, Germany; Orleans, France; Zweibrucken and Rosenkopf, Germany, and finally, Portage, when Dad retired from the U.S. Defense Supply Agency in 1981. Ellen always had a friendly smile as she greeted customers as cashier at Chobany’s Market on Main Street in Portage. She received a commendation for her bravery in thwarting an armed robber who entered the store in 2006. Ellen was a tireless worker for her family and church and volunteered for many organizations providing help for people in need. She was a member of the Officers’ Women’s Club of Zweibrucken U.S. Army Base and managed their thrift store. Longtime member of St. Michael’s Orthodox Church and president of the Church Sisterhood, she helped organize various fundraising projects, especially their sought-after poppy seed, nut and apricot rolls. She enjoyed the companionship of her many friends at the Portage Senior Center, where they prepared many Meals-on-Wheels packages for the homebound in Portage.
