OAKLAND — GEORGE – Robert A., “Bob,” “Frankie,” 83, Oakland, died Sept. 4, 2010, at his residence. Born March 9, 1927, in Johnstown, son of Arthur L. and Helen (Varchol) George. Preceded in death by parents; wife, Alice (Potter); and brother, Donald J. Survived by daughters, Robin, married to Tim Lazor, Oakmont, and Brenda George, Pittsburgh; grandson, Benjamin George Lazor, also of Oakmont; sisters-in-law, Helen King; Marie, married to Don McLaughlin; Evelyn, married to Ken Bloom; and Sylvia Potter; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friend, Ramona Flook. A 1945 graduate of Johnstown High School. District 6 pole-vault champ, 1945. Indiana State Teachers College, 1953 business degree. College sports teams: Football, track and wrestling from 1949- 1953. Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity member. Served in U.S. Army during Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1955. Retired from Bethlehem Steel general office, where he worked in the payroll department. Lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he enjoyed many church activities, especially serving as a church usher, teaching Sunday school and coaching the boys’ basketball teams. Especially proud of the 1977 team winning the Shaughnessy Championship. Always physically active and enjoyed running, most notably finishing the 1979 Johnstown Marathon at age 52. He also enjoyed amateur boxing, horseshoes, bowling, golfing and walking. Later in life, he loved singing karaoke. He was affectionately nicknamed “Frankie” because of the many Sinatra songs he sang. Bob was a generous, caring person who volunteered in many organizations throughout his life, including Lutheran Men’s Club, local hospitals, Retired Men’s Chorus and Victim Services. Above all, Bob was a devoted son, husband, father and friend. He loved the family picnics in his yard. Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Henderson Funeral Home, East Hills, 2503 Bedford St., where funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, the Rev. Michael A. VanDyke. Interment, Grandview Cemetery. Contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Hospital.
