F. Paul Herdman

JOHNSTOWN — HERDMAN – F. Paul, Johnstown,  passed away peacefully Nov. 2, 2013, at home after a long battle with cancer. Born August 3, 1925, in Johnstown. Paul was preceded in death by parents, Franklin John and Florence Gertrude (White) Herdman; aunt, Mary (Herdman) Lambert; brothers, Donald, Robert and Kenneth; and sister, Mary Catherine. Paul leaves his loving wife and best friend of 52 years, Barbara Ann (McIlwaine) Herdman; six children, daughters, Carolyn Anne, wife of Thomas Fisher, LaPlata, Md.; Mary Jane Decembrino (Joseph); Debra Dailey (James); Tammy Honkus (Ronald); sons, James (Jennifer); and John (Diana); 13 grandchildren; and  one great-grandchild. Paul took pride that he was the oldest of 13 children, surviving siblings, William, Maurice and Beverly (Gary Long); brother-in-law, Alvin Callihan, Janet (Raymond Newcomer) and Raymond (Remont); and sister-in-law, Barbara, Elizabeth Jean (John Reitz), Karen (Ralph Wilson) and Kathleen (Thomas Williams). Paul was a member of Roxbury St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. In his early years, he was an active member of various musical activities, which was influenced by his grandmother and aunt. He was a member of the American Federation of Musicians, Local 41, various drum and bugle corps, director of the former Upper Yoder Fire Department marching band and various dance bands from 1939 to 1960, including his own dance band, The Paul Mann Orchestra. His love of music was a driving force in his daughter Carolyn’s performance career and later choosing to pursue a career in music education. He was a retired manager of Atlantic & Pacific Co. Paul’s community involvement also included charter member of the Upper Yoder Fire Department; Southmont Fire Department, where he was honored as a life member; Pennsylvania State Fire Police captain for Southmont; member of former Cambria Fire Chiefs Association; former chairman of the advisory board for Rainbow for Girls; member of the Johnstown Lodge 538; Portage Royal Arch Chapter 195; Tall Cedar of Lebanon 127; a 32nd Degree Mason through the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Altoona; and served on the board of trustees at his church. He loved golfing and playing his saxophone and participating in community organizations. A very special thank you to his hospice staff and volunteers including, Carolyn Hawkins, Walt Wonjerowski and Susan Wagner, who provided an endless amount of support for his immediate family through this very trying time. He will be sadly missed by wife, Barbara; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Tom; and admiring and loving grandchildren, Mary and John Fisher. He will be remembered by those who knew him for his willingness to help anyone and for his sense of humor.  Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and  6 to 8 p.m. Monday at John Henderson Co. Funeral Home, 215 Central Ave., Johnstown, where service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday prior to final resting place at Grandview Cemetery, the Rev. Bruce Griffith. Masonic service at  7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Paul’s memory to Conemaugh Hospice.
