Ruth I. (Vorhauer) Furst

COLUMBIA HEIGHTS, MINN. — FURST– Ruth I. (Vorhauer), 94, Columbia Heights, Minn., formerly of Camillus, N.Y., and Johnstown, died Oct. 28, 2013. Preceded in death by parents, George and Elizabeth Vorhauer; husband, Jack; son, Douglas; sisters, Betty and Erma; and brother, Raymond. Survived by sons, Jeffrey (Ann), Paul (Sandra) and Alan (Carolyn); daughter, Robin (Duane) Ricard; grandchildren, Heidi, Jon, Christina, Jennifer, Jessica, Christopher, David and Steven; and great-grandchildren, Rachel, Jacob, Lydia, Ada, Alex, Kaden, Karlie, Jack and Faith. On her 90th birthday she looked at everyone gathered for her party and said, “A person couldn’t have a nicer family.” We all feel the same about her and will miss her deeply. She attended business college for two years and retired from GTE Sylvania after 19 years of employment in office administration assistance. Ruth is remembered for her light-hearted wit and humor as well as pragmatic solutions to everyday problems. She taught us the many uses for rubber bands and she frequently had a rubber band on her wrist “just in case.” Very few people could use an electric typewriter as creatively as Ruth. She also will be remembered by her family for watermelon pickles, pot pie, baking fresh bread on Saturdays and making roast on Sundays for after church. She enjoyed quilting, sewing and crossword puzzles. Whenever she made a dress she always made a matching bow tie for her husband, Jack. Many times it was Jack’s bow ties that got noticed in public and she took pride in making her man look sharp. Her favorite color, red, was a color of which she never grew tired. Ruth liked “Wheel of Fortune” and consistently knew the solutions before the guests on the program. She would work her crossword puzzles and solve the “Wheel of Fortune” puzzle simultaneously. She also believed that one day she would win Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes. Even though she never won, she never stopped hoping that one day Ed McMahon would show up on her doorstep. She enjoyed her three season porch - her “cabin in the woods” while drinking coffee, playing board games and listening to the birds sing. Ruth loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always found simple ways to let them know how important they were to her. She always believed the best in each one and wanted each one to be happy. She volunteered many hours working in the office of St. Phillip’s Lutheran Church. She also gave her time delivering meals for Meals on Wheels. She felt blessed and privileged to live a happy life and wanted to share her good fortune with others. Memorials preferred to your local food shelf. A private remembrance will be celebrated at a later date for family.

Do you think that Jack Williams will get the 270 signatures from city residents needed in order to have a referendum placed on a municipal ballot to have the city's pressure test mandate repealed?

I'm not sure
